Clifford Green, LCSW

Psychotherapist
HI
Aloha, I understand therapy as an open and collaborative conversation, one we can have at any point in our lives. My sessions do not emphasize a person’s diagnoses, and I never view people through the lens of pathology. I prefer to build a warm and nurturing environment that provides space for us to explore the most supportive interventions to address your specific needs. Whether you are an individual seeking therapy, or couple, polycule, or something entirely unique, my goal is to help you find the best way to discover genuine self-love and self-compassion. I am practical and analytical by nature, but I don’t have all the answers. My hope is we can find them together. Wherever you are on your path in life, I feel privileged to be a part of your healing journey. I have been trained and educated in a vast array of treatment modalities and interventions, and what I have found after all these years is that people do not easily fit into a mold, and that means no single theory will work on its own. I prefer to develop individualized treatment strategies that we can develop and evolve together as we work to experience how true acceptance and self-acceptance can lead to authentic nonjudgment, which can show us what it means to finally love ourselves. I often employ dialectical behavior therapy in combination with other methods, which may draw from CBT, sex therapy, psychoanalysis, gestalt therapy, emotion-focused couples therapy, the Gottman method, and others to build an eclectic approach to more adequately meet clients’ needs.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My clients experience a wide variety of issues impacting mental health and functioning, relationship stability, and overall homeostasis. Many of my clients come from the queer community, and many are couples or individuals in alternatively styled or open relationships. Those I work with are seeking help to address trauma and sexual trauma, serious mental illness, severe anxiety disorders, major depression or bipolar disorder, forensic encumbrance, substance use and process addiction, issues related to sex and sexuality, while many are navigating the transgender experience. I work with a great many couples who are seeking support on several types of issues, including cheating and infidelity, loss of libido, trauma-related sex challenges, sexual desire discrepancy, blended families and divorce, porn and obsessive-compulsive sexual behavior (sex addiction), and coping with end-of-life issues. I support the kink community, which includes bdsm lifestyles, throuples and polycules, other lifestyle-specific communities such as pup play, consensual-nonconsent relationships, fetish-based sexuality, professional and amateur sex work, age play, and others. Finally, I employ specialized interventions to treat narcissism, borderline and histrionic personality, dependent personality (and codependency), schizoid personality, obsessive-compulsive personality vs OCD, and avoidant personality. I have extensive experience treating antisocial personality (psychopathy and sociopathy). I have a relaxed and conversational therapy style. My goal is for clients to feel they can safely explore their own vulnerability and feel wholly accepted in the process. If you are ever concerned that we may just be talking story, at any point in therapy, I will provide an update to outline what we are currently working on, where that places us in your treatment plan, and how much progress you have made toward those goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Goal setting is an evolving and adaptive process. We review goals regularly and reconstruct or transfigure them as necessary. Life's journey can plot a meandering path, which means what feels like a goal in the beginning may be re-evaluated several times in the course of therapy. There is no typical first session, but I prefer to approach the process slowly to provide enough time to build a connection. The first session is our first opportunity to get to know one another, but our working relationship will likely evolve as we continue in therapy and trust grows. We will develop a familiar rhythm in time, so I am comfortable allowing time to establish boundaries and limits.
