Courtney Cohen, SW, LCSW, MSW

Psychotherapist
PA
I have worked in the field of social work for over 20 years. My experience includes case management in the community mental health setting, working with children and families in a school setting, serving as a substance abuse navigator helping individuals who are struggling with addiction, working in the field of Early Intervention with young children who have developmental delays, and working with adult individuals struggling with a variety of mental health concerns. My passion has always been in helping people discover their inner strength, particularly when they are going through a transition or a bout with mental illness. As someone who has suffered from depression myself, I know how it feels to have difficulty just getting through daily tasks. When you are emotionally unwell, everything seems hard. It is a privilege to sit with my clients when they are in pain and offer hope where they thought there was none. I take a nonjudgmental, compassionate, and strength-based approach in my work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I want clients to feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible while working together. I take the client’s lead on where they would like to focus and how quickly they would like to set the pace of progress. I encourage open communication and appreciate honest feedback. Depending on what resonates with a client, I might pull strategies from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), emotionally focused therapy (EFT), or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to assist clients in reaching their goals. I often ask clients if they would like “homework” or book recommendations but do not require this. I enjoy working with clients who are new to therapy and don’t know what to expect, as well as clients who know what they are looking for and are familiar with the therapeutic process.
