Getting to know Courtney Markowitz

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist with a Master's in Counseling Psychology from California State University. I specialize in working with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, and trauma that lead to difficulties regulating emotions. I support clients who experience overwhelming anxiety that results in behaviors like shutting down, self-injury, and withdrawal from social situations. The clients I work with are willing to unpack childhood and the unconscious to increase self-awareness and help make sense of their current behaviors. I also work with couples who struggle with communication issues that lead to discontentment in their relationships. Using CBT, DBT, perspective-taking, and the therapeutic relationship, I help my clients learn skills to manage and reduce the symptoms they are struggling with. I focus on balancing the dialectic between acceptance and change (“what you're doing totally makes sense, and it's not working for you, so let's work on changing it”). I am passionate about understanding my clients' worldviews and helping them make sense of themselves while changing what isn't working for them. Anxiety and other mental health challenges can make life unmanageable at times. I want to help you learn how to manage it so you can be your most authentic badass self!

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have a more directive approach meaning, I am not a therapist who will just listen and validate you. I want to support you with learning skills so that you can be self sufficient and can get to a point where you no longer need therapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I like to understand current symptoms or manifestations of my client's problems and help them find solutions to the problems. During our session I will ask what current concerns are or what the client would like to dig deeper into and will take their lead while supporting them with creating a new understanding of the problem.
