Getting to know Craig Kaplan

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s degree from Long Island University and over 15 years of experience in the field. I specialize in working with adults who are ready to make meaningful changes in their lives. My approach encourages you to explore your personal history, relationships, and habits to better understand how they shape who you are today. I place a strong emphasis on building a supportive therapeutic relationship, while also being honest and direct in challenging unhelpful patterns that may be keeping you stuck. Many of my clients come to me for support with depression, anxiety, and relationship difficulties, often in the context of life stressors such as work, parenting, divorce, or major transitions. Clients often tell me that I help them go deeper to uncover the “why” behind long-standing struggles, while also giving them the encouragement and push they need to make real, lasting changes. My goal is to provide a safe, supportive space where you feel both understood and motivated to grow. Please note that I see clients located in New York only and do not prescribe medication. I look forward to working with you and supporting you on your journey toward lasting change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Please note: I can only see clients who are located in New York. As a relational therapist, I believe the deepest healing happens within the context of a supportive, authentic relationship. Therapy is not just about learning skills—it’s about having a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can be fully seen and understood. Together, we will build a working relationship where your goals guide the process, and I will walk alongside you as you take steps toward meaningful change. My style is collaborative, direct, and encouraging. I will listen carefully and provide a supportive environment, but I will also challenge you when necessary to help you break through old patterns that may be holding you back. Clients often tell me that I help them go deeper than they expected, uncovering the “why” behind struggles and supporting them in creating the changes they have long wanted but struggled to achieve on their own. You can expect sessions with me to feel both supportive and purposeful. We may look at your relational history, current relationships, habits, and stressors to better understand the bigger picture of your life. From there, we’ll work toward greater clarity, self-awareness, and practical steps that align with your goals. Whether you are navigating depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, divorce, parenting, or life transitions, my aim is to help you feel empowered, less stuck, and more connected to yourself and others. Therapy with me is a place where you’ll be understood, supported, and gently pushed toward the growth you are seeking.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Please note: I can only see clients who are located in New York. When you book a session, our team will reach out to complete the intake paperwork and verify your insurance so that we can get started smoothly. Your first session will focus on understanding your background, current concerns, and the goals you’d like to work toward. This initial meeting also gives you the chance to get a sense of my style and ask any questions about the therapy process. In our ongoing work together, sessions will be a space for you to talk openly while I listen, reflect, and guide you in noticing patterns in your thoughts, feelings, and relationships. Often, these patterns can keep you stuck in cycles of stress, self-doubt, or disconnection. My role is to help you understand where these patterns come from, how they show up in your life today, and—most importantly—how to shift them into healthier, more effective ways of being. I use a relational approach, meaning that our therapeutic relationship is central to the healing process. I strive to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment, while also being direct and honest in helping you see what might need to change. Clients often describe the process as both safe and challenging: a balance of encouragement and accountability that helps them move forward. Over time, you can expect therapy with me to help you gain clarity, build healthier coping strategies, and feel more grounded and confident as you navigate life’s challenges—whether that involves managing stress, depression, anxiety, or significant life transitions.

I didn’t find this therapist useful or helpful at all. He lacked empathy, listening skills, and the ability to build any type of connection with me. I cut the session early since there was a clear disconnect in whatever he was trying to get out of the session and what I was seeking from a genuine conversation. Horrible experience, wish I could get my time and money back, would not recommend at all.
