Psychotherapist
WI
Hi there, I'm Curt! I am a licensed professional counselor. My goal is to understand and assist you in resolving your concerns, but also help you define the life you would like to have and support you in reaching your goal(s). I believe counseling should help people build a life that is meaningful to them because a meaningful life gives us energy, excitement, and self-satisfaction. Ultimately, I hope to help you be able to do your own therapy when we are finished. My approach My practice approach is cognitive-behavioral-affective. Affect means emotion that exists in the present moment. People are social entities, and emotions allow us to feel connected and have relationships. Emotions, at their core, are information that need to be rationally considered. Finding out what the emotions are trying to inform you of can focus your work. Emotions are defined in large part by the meaning a person gives to them. Part of therapy concerns learning about your thinking tendencies and how they affect your responses. Some people benefit from improving skills like problem-solving because life comes with problems. I believe in using behavioral experiments once you feel centered and have a level of empowerment. Behavioral experiments for me are generally of two types: trying something you have always wanted to do or trying something differently that you do not enjoy but seem to run into in life. In the second case, the goal is to help you learn it is not fun but you can manage. The goal of the first type is to avoid regret in wishing you had tried something and to find meaning in your life because when people are doing what is important to them, they feel better and enjoy life. My focus My background includes working with individuals aged 20-80 years. Mood and anxiety disorders are my preference. My communication style During the initial session, I am business-like. I have found a thorough understanding informs treatment and helps avoid having to find things out weeks later.
