Cuyana Davis-Carter, LCPC

Psychotherapist
213 W Institute Pl, 500, Chicago, IL
There are times in life where we feel stuck and unable to get to where we desire to be. Our therapy will seek to intervene at that stuck place. During our time together, we can discover patterns in your relationships, thoughts, and actions. Patterns that, while they may have served a purpose in the past, may no longer be beneficial. My hope is to create an environment in which you feel the freedom to explore, question, and define your authentic self. I provide humor, gentle challenging, creative interventions and non-judgmental support to help you create a more fulfilling life. Additionally, I utilize body and somatic-based strategies such as Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to support those experiencing PTSD, traumatic memories, long-held negative beliefs about themselves, and everyday stressors. This work can be done supplementally for those who already have a primary therapist. Much of who we become is a result of our relationships with others, society at large, and our experiences from interactions with oppressive systems. Knowing this, I am committed to working with people in undervalued and underserved communities, particularly LGBTQIAA+ people, people of color, folks in alternative relationship structures - and people at those intersections - to support you in navigating this world.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

While diagnoses can be important and are necessary for insurance purposes, we live in a world where stigmatization of certain mental illnesses is common. A session with me could look like exploring what ails you through a decolonial lense - which means understanding the context within which your symptoms are an understandable (and often necessary) reaction to the oppressive systems we exist in. We can explore this while also assessing personal accountability to making the changes you are wanting to make in your life. We will co-create a space where you are developing realistic, reasonable goals based on your unique circumstances. This can be done in varied ways, including creative homework assignments, mindfulness exercises, community-based interventions, and reflecting on how the ways you show up in the therapeutic space mirror your patterns outside of therapy.
