Cynthia Avers, LCPC

Psychotherapist
IL
As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and National Certified Counselor (NCC), my approach is grounded primarily in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I incorporate specialized training in ACT and Emotion Efficacy Therapy (EET), along with trauma-informed Brainspotting and existential perspectives, within a Process-Based Therapy (PBT) framework. Therapy is a collaborative process. Together, we can explore patterns that may be keeping you stuck, strengthen your ability to navigate difficult thoughts and emotions, and develop greater psychological flexibility. Our work focuses on helping you move toward a life that is increasingly aligned with your own values and what matters most to you. Outside of the therapy room, my background in the arts has cultivated a deep respect for the narratives that shape us and the richness of the human journey. My experience raising two independent adult sons has further informed my appreciation for the fluid nature of development and the unique paths individuals choose to follow.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I believe therapy works best as a collaborative process. In our initial sessions, I take time to understand what brings you to therapy, what is happening in your life now, and the experiences and patterns that have shaped you. Together, we identify what matters most to you and where you would like to see meaningful change. Sessions are conversational and individualized rather than formulaic. I draw from evidence-based approaches based on your needs, helping you develop greater awareness of thoughts, emotions, and patterns while building the flexibility to respond to them differently. I view my role as walking alongside you—offering insight, support, and practical strategies while respecting that you are the expert on your own life.
