Getting to know Damon Neely

Therapist for High-Functioning Professionals & Men: Existential + CBT | Anxiety, Self-Worth, Burnout, Trauma & Life Direction Damon Neely is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and U.S. Marine Corps veteran with over 21 years of healthcare experience. He founded Join the Rebellion 23 Inc. to serve one specific population: high-performing men who have mastered external success but privately feel anxious, empty, or trapped by their own standards. His clients are founders, executives, physicians, attorneys, and engineers navigating perfectionism, imposter syndrome, burnout, and proof-based self-worth. They perform at a high level and feel exhausted by it. Many have never tried therapy before — or tried it and found it too passive for how they're wired. Damon practices through Character Driven Therapy (CDT), an integrative framework he developed specifically for this population. CDT combines psychodynamic and existential work — exploring the deeper patterns and internal narratives shaping a client's sense of self — with practical, evidence-based strategies from CBT, ACT, and Solution-Focused therapy. Sessions are direct, collaborative, and built to produce both insight and meaningful change. Join the Rebellion 23 Inc. is fully remote, with licensure across nine states: NC, NY, MA, FL, SC, CT, IL, UT, and ID. Sessions are $155, private pay, with superbills available for out-of-network reimbursement. A free 15-minute consultation is available for prospective clients.

What should a new client know about working with you?

If you're coming to therapy for the first time — or returning after a bad experience — here's what I want you to know before we start. I work differently than the stereotype. I'm not going to sit quietly while you talk in circles. I'm engaged, direct, and willing to say the thing that's sitting in the room that nobody's named yet. If I notice a pattern, I'll point it out. If something you're saying doesn't add up, I'll ask about it. That directness is intentional — it's what high-performing men actually need, and it's what most therapy fails to deliver. At the same time, this is your work. I follow your lead on pace and depth. Nothing gets pushed before you're ready, and there's no agenda other than helping you get where you want to go. Sessions move between insight and action. Some days we go deep — tracing a pattern back to where it started, examining the internal narrative driving your anxiety or perfectionism. Other days we build — developing concrete tools, shifting specific behaviors, creating change you can feel between sessions. Most sessions do both. You don't need to come in with everything figured out. You don't need the right words or a clear sense of what's wrong. You need to show up honestly and be willing to look at what's there. I'll handle the rest. One more thing: asking for help is hard for men who are wired to handle everything themselves. If reaching out felt uncomfortable, that discomfort makes sense — and it doesn't mean this isn't right for you. Most of the time, it means it is. The first session is just a conversation. Let's see what's there.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Most clients start with a free 15-minute consultation — a low-stakes conversation to get a sense of fit before committing to anything. I'll ask what's bringing you in, you can ask me anything you want, and we'll both get a read on whether this feels right. If it does, we schedule an intake session. The intake is a deeper conversation — where I get a fuller picture of who you are, what's driving you to therapy now, and what you want to be different. I'm not running through a checklist. I'm listening for the patterns underneath what you're describing, and starting to map where the work needs to go. From there, sessions follow a rhythm that's structured but flexible. We don't start from scratch each week — we're building on something. Early sessions tend to be more exploratory, going deeper into the origins of your patterns, your relationship with yourself, and the belief systems driving your anxiety, perfectionism, or burnout. As the work develops, sessions become more action-oriented — building concrete tools, shifting specific behaviors, and consolidating the changes you're making between sessions. I work primarily in 45-minute weekly sessions. Most clients engage for 12 to 24 sessions, though some go longer as new layers emerge. I'll be honest with you throughout about where I think we are and what I think you need — including when I think you're ready to step down or wrap up. Between sessions, I may suggest reflection exercises or specific practices tied to what we're working on. Nothing overwhelming — just ways to keep the work active in your daily life rather than confined to one hour a week. The goal throughout is momentum. You should feel the work moving between sessions, not just during them.

At age 60 it’s hard to find someone to connect with at this level. Damon is that guy. A Veteran and he understands the complexities with my generation. I would recommend him to anyone.
Damon is someone who made it easy to open up to because he is very empathetic, and a great listener. He is appreciative of when you do the work outside of the sessions, which is great positive reinforcement for you to take ownership, and work as a team. It is hard to assess if a therapist will be a good fit for each individual, but his profile “on paper” exceeded my expectations in how he described himself and what his approach and areas of specialty are. I highly recommend meeting with him to see if he’s a good fit for you!
I’ve been a patient of Damon’s for a little over a year now. In that time, Damon’s counseling has helped me to identify many of the flattering lies I had written into the story I told myself about who I am. He also helped me to find the courage to face and process past experiences that I had kept buried for many years. Confronting these truths has been essential in developing a more honest understanding of the self-destructive patterns of thought and behavior that had numbed my experience of life. Through this process, I’ve always known that Damon was on my side and he never made me feel small, foolish, or immoral. Damon helped me to develop the tools I needed to reengage with life, and he helped me to learn how to find the paths that will lead me closer to becoming the person I want to be for the people in my life and for myself. I’ve felt fortunate to have Damon as a therapist, and I highly recommend his services to anyone looking for thoughtful, compassionate guidance.
I would highly recommend Damon - especially to men going through life transitions, who are hesitant to the idea of therapy. Talking to him feels like having a trusted, stoic friend. His calm temperament and thoughtful well-timed insights always create the right environment for valuable self-reflection. I've worked with Damon through a few seasons of life now, and continue to be grateful for how he's able to evolve our conversations to meet me where I am. I believe that working with him allows me to bring my best self to the relationships in my life.
Damon is as professional as they get. He has been a huge part of helping me navigate my path through the trials life presents. He is honest and gives the guidance you need. He challenges you to be better in an honest and constructive way, which I have found immeasurably helpful.
I have been working with Damon for a few years now and have nothing but good things to say. I was in a dark place and he adapted the pace of our conversations and my growth based on the bandwidth that I had available. He uses a number of different approaches and communication style to help you find the tools you need for mental health stability. Damon has also done an excellent job helping my define my virtues and holding myself accountable to them in my daily life. I also appreciate approach to the timeline of care which varies as needed. We dont meet as frequently as initially because he has helped me find my internal strength to stand on my own legs and sort out my crisis. Forever thankful!
I’ve been going to Damon for the past two years and he has been nothing but amazing. Whatever journey my life takes me, I can always rely on Damon to be my support system. He’s extremely caring and wants to see you succeed with your journey. I highly recommend Damon!
Damon is as professional as they get. Expert in getting men back on the right path. Would highly recommend to any man looking for guidance. He is honest and trustworthy.
I have been fortunate to work with Damon for the past few years, and he has been an invaluable resource in strengthening my mental health, confidence, and ability to manage change. Through family loss, job changes, and personal milestones, Damon has been there for me. He is an exceptional practitioner and I would recommend anyone to work with him if you have the opportunity to do so.
