Getting to know Dan Hoefling

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in NY and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional: Level 2 (CCTP-II) with a passion for helping people overcome patterns in their lives that no longer serve them. I hold a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University. My professional background ranges from working with individuals struggling with severe and persistent mental illness to those facing life transitions and stressors. I have years of experience running groups focused on men's trauma, depression, anxiety, co-occurring substance abuse and mental health conditions, and anger management. It is through this work that I developed my passion for valuing each part of ourselves that has helped us get to where we are, even if we are not yet where we want to be.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach focuses on helping you use awareness so you can feel more in control. You will learn strategies to reduce "in-the-moment" intensity and to become curious about patterns you are working on changing. Doing this will allow you to understand them more so you can develop other methods to meet those same needs. I combine mindfulness, CBT, DBT, Internal Family Systems, and somatic techniques to help you reach these goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Each session, you can expect that I will listen deeply without judgment to help us explore your experiences and collaborate around how to find relief. I use probing questions to explore and reflection to help clarify and shift your awareness, and am active in the therapy process. I often bring in humor, curiosity, and compassion to help us develop strategies to find other ways of coping. My goal is that you leave each session with either concrete strategies or new perspectives on how to relate to what you are going through.

Dan is excellent. He actively listens to me and provides such helpful feedback and insight. He has provided me with techniques and tools that help me help myself, which is what I wanted. I highly recommend him.
Dan is an active listener who is able to participate with me on the path to treating my mental health concerns. I feel like I am talking to a professional who wants to help me find my way through trials rather than a following a formula that may not be about me at all. He is skilled at assisting me to find the adaptive behaviors that are no longer serving my needs and balancing those with acceptance, boundaries and effective self coaching. No other therapist has given me homework, but it has been so helpful!
Dan is such an amazing therapist. Literally changed my life - I have found happiness for the first time in 20 years. What I love most about Dan is that he really gives you the tools to deal with the emotions that come up. Whenever I went to therapists before they would always say things like "well why don't you change your perspective?" and my thought would always be "how??" Well Dan helped me find the "how"! Dan is really knows how to help you poke holes in your own thinking by asking very thoughtful and pointed questions. I like that he doesn't poke the holes... he kind of makes you do it yourself with his questions. I also love how involved Dan is - I hate it when a therapist expects me to just vent for the whole session. I like structure! I like it when my therapist points out thought patterns and helps me dig into them! That's Dan. He's the best!
Dan is an excellent listener and is very perceptive at addressing not only salient problems but underlying issues as well. He has extensive knowledge of mental health diagnoses and their treatment. He has also provided guidance on where to find further information and services. I have learned a lot from working with Dan and can honestly say that I'm in a better place now than when I started my therapy.
