Hi, I'm Dee Washburn, LPC. Congratulations on your decision to begin therapy. Today, you are one step closer to making changes in your life that will lead to new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Virginia Tech (1991), and a Master's degree in Counseling from Liberty University (1996). I have received specialized training in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy from the Albert Ellis Institute. I have also taken extensive courses in service member support and veteran care from Star Behavioral Health Providers. From 1997 to 2000, I served as the Director of Client Services at the Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center, where I gained experience providing counsel on pregnancy, parenting, abortion, healing after abortion, foster care and adoption. In 2000, I also worked as the Director of Counseling at the Liberty God-Parent Home and Family Life Services Adoption Agency in Lynchburg, VA. This opportunity provided me with training in the areas of adoption and foster care. In 1999, I became a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia and began working in private practice. After 10 years as an LPC, I opened my own private practice, Daleville Family Counseling, where I have continued to serve as the founder, owner and operator since 2006. Whether you are looking for support through a challenging circumstance, or you are simply ready to move your life in a new direction, I look forward to working with you to help you achieve your goals.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I've developed a therapeutic approach designed to create a respectful and encouraging environment where clients feel both validated and motivated toward growth. I maintain a calm, attuned clinical presence using a trauma-informed approach that prioritizes safety, empowerment and collaboration. My work is skills-based and incorporates evidence-based behavioral tools, psycho-education, and practical strategies tailored to each clients needs. I take a holistic view of well-being and can integrate a faith-sensitive perspective when desired by the client. Across all sessions, I emphasize self-awareness and personal responsibility, helping clients develop insight while strengthening their ability to navigate life with confidence and resilience. My approach to therapy is collaborative and growth-oriented. I strive to create a supportive space where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered, while also offering gentle challenges to help them move toward meaningful change. I ensure clients experience safety, choice and control throughout the therapeutic process. My approach is holistic, considering the emotional, behavioral, relational, and spiritual dimensions of a person's life. I aim to help clients build self-awareness, strengthen personal responsibility, and develop the resilience needed to navigate life with confidence.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first session with me lasts about 60 minutes and focuses on helping us build a clear understanding of how we will work together. I'll explain my expectations, your rights as a client, confidentiality, HIPAA privacy, telehealth basics and my role as a mandated reporter. We will complete an initial intake, where I ask about your history, current concerns, and what brought you to therapy. By the end of the session, we will identify your goals and outline a plan for moving forward so you know what to expect from the therapeutic process.
