What is your typical process for working with clients?

My style is somewhat centered around the ideas of talk therapy; I like to have sessions be somewhat conversational and focus on either the client's present lived experience or past experiences that may be impacting their life currently. That said, I draw from more structured approaches like CBT, DBT and IFS if clients need more guidance or concrete strategies. I've also found a lot of success in bringing in attachment theory and psychodynamic theory as unpack past experiences (especially early ones) can help shed light on, and de-mystify some client behaviors and coping mechanisms. That said, research shows that rapport predicts the most positive therapeutic outcomes for clients, so this is what I prioritize in my work. I definitely believe in being direct and not shying away from topics while still maintain a gentle, compassionate approach that doesn't overwhelm the client. I’m definitely a believer in taking your time and not rushing clients to the fastest or most optimized solution to their problem, but instead taking your time to build rapport, create a comfortable trusting space, and only push the boundaries when it feels the time is right.
