Getting to know Daniel James

Mr. Daniel James is a skilled and compassionate psychotherapist. He sees patients in person at Wiser Counseling in Scottsdale, Arizona, and offers virtual consultations via Wiser Counseling-Telehealth AZ. Mr. James holds a master's degree in community counseling from Indiana State University. He is committed to helping the wider community receive the care it deserves. He works with patients experiencing a variety of emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns. During consultations, he listens carefully, explains the conditions, and helps patients select a suitable treatment plan.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As your therapist, I will work collaboratively with you to develop strategies to help you manage your mental health concerns so that you can reach your goals and live a more satisfactory and fulfilling life. I most commonly use cognitive behavioral, solution focused, and meditation and mindfulness approaches in my counseling. I have additional training in marriage and family therapy, motivational interviewing, DBT, and trauma informed therapy.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In your first session I will conduct an assessment that will allow me to get to know you and why you have come to counseling. I will ask you questions about your problems, symptoms, what your goals are for counseling, and about your life history that has brought you to where you are. Then we will come up with a plan together to help you reach your goals. This will include helping you to get to know me, what you can expect from counseling, and how the process of counseling works. Going forward, expect me to work with you on developing strategies to help you. I will provide you support and guidance that will include giving you a safe and non-judgemental space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings. Throughout we will utilize evidence based techniques that will be tailored to you needs while regularly assessing your progress and adjusting your treatment plan as needed.

It was a warm setting and welcoming environment. This allowed me to be vulnerable and release my current issues.
Completely professional but empathetic, communicative and very inviting to converse with.

Been seeing Daniel for a few months now. He’s really helped me get out of a dark place after my dad passed. can’t thank him enough.
super easy to talk to. i was nervous at first but he made me feel comfortable right away. really helpful with my anxiety stuff.
Daniel is awesome!! I came in feeling anxious all the time and he’s helped me find ways to calm down when it hits. I feel so much better these days.

I started seeing Daniel after some health issues came up and I couldn’t deal with the fear and frustration. He’s helped me figure out how to manage my emotions better instead of bottling everything up. I’m in my late 60s, been through a lot, and this guy still finds ways to help me see things I never thought about. Really appreciate him.
Been dealing with chronic pain for a while and it really messed with my mood. I was angry all the time, short with my family. Daniel helped me realize how much of it was tied to grief and fear. He’s not some young know-it-all, he actually listens. I didn’t expect to like therapy but I do now.
Lost my wife 2 years ago and honestly didn’t think I’d ever feel okay again. My daughter pushed me to try therapy and I’m glad I did. Daniel helped me find ways to grieve without getting stuck in it. He’s patient, good listener, doesn’t make you feel broken. I still have hard days, but I’m finally finding a bit of peace.
Really good at breaking things down in a way that makes sense. He’s not all clinical or stiff. feels like talking to a normal person who gets it.
Didn’t think I’d ever be the guy writing a therapist review but here we are. I retired last year and hit a wall — lost my routine, lost some friends, lost my sense of purpose. Daniel helped me unpack all that without making me feel like something’s “wrong” with me. He listens, but also challenges me to look at things differently. I always leave our sessions feeling lighter.
Daniel is an amazingly skilled therapist. He is very easy to talk to, kind and friendly. If you're going through a difficult time or need to gain insight to emotional patterns I highly recommend that make an appointment with him.
My visits with Daniel often help me realize certain issues I didn't see before and he always helps me figure out good ways to work on them. He's got a great attention span and always listens to what I have to say. He also gives me the extra push I need to succeed.
Although I was, at first, quite nervous and distraught, Daniel's calm soothing manner put me at ease. He absolutely helped me understand how I had gotten into my current difficulties and how I could get myself out. I left with a sense of relief, hope and renewed energy.
Daniel is an incredibly patient and kind therapist who has provided excellent help in guiding me through the ups and downs of life the last few months. He truly cares about his patients and remembers all of the details of your last conversation showcasing his ability to prove he is attentive and invested in you. I highly recommend Daniel!
