Getting to know David Adams

As a licensed therapist, my mission is to provide a safe, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space where clients can explore their thoughts, emotions, and life experiences. I believe that every individual has the capacity for growth, healing, and change, and my role is to walk alongside you in that journey.

What should a new client know about working with you?

1. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit Therapy can help you understand yourself, build coping skills, and improve relationships, even if you’re not currently struggling. 2. Consistency matters Regular, scheduled sessions—especially in the beginning—help build rapport and momentum. Weekly sessions are often recommended to make steady progress. 3. Change takes time Therapy isn’t a quick fix. While some may feel better early on, lasting change usually requires at least 8–12 sessions. Be patient and committed. 4. Goals are collaborative Work with your therapist to define clear, shared treatment goals. This keeps you focused and gives you a sense of direction. 5. Therapy is a safe space You can be open about what’s working and what’s not. Your feedback is valuable, and therapists encourage honest communication. 6. You’re an active participant Therapy is a partnership. You’ll need to engage between sessions—reflecting on your thoughts, practicing skills, and applying what you learn. 7. Expect a process, not instant answers Real growth often comes from repeated work, not single breakthroughs. Think of therapy like learning an instrument: practice outside sessions is essential. 8. Your hesitation is normal Feeling nervous or unsure is a sign you value the process. Therapists build trust by listening, matching your pace, and creating a safe environment. 9. You control the pace You decide how much to share and when. Therapists will adapt to your comfort level, not the other way around. 10. The first session is about connection It’s not about solving all problems right away. The focus is on building trust and understanding, which sets the foundation for future work

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Active Listening: Therapists listen attentively to what clients say, as well as to nonverbal cues such as body language and emotional expressions. This helps them understand the client's experiences and feelings more deeply. Creating a Safe Space: A therapist provides a confidential and non-judgmental environment where clients can express themselves freely. This safety is crucial for effective therapy. Facilitating Dialogue: Through structured conversations, therapists help clients uncover insights about their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This dialogue is essential for understanding and resolving issues. Therapeutic Techniques: Depending on their training, therapists may use various techniques, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address negative thought patterns, or Psychodynamic Therapy to explore past experiences and their impact on current behavior. Setting Goals: Therapists work with clients to establish therapy goals, which guide the sessions and help measure progress over time. This collaborative approach ensures that therapy is tailored to the client's needs. Providing Psychoeducation: Therapists may offer information about mental health, coping strategies, and the therapeutic process itself, helping clients understand what to expect and how to navigate their challenges. Emotional Support: Therapists provide empathy and validation, helping clients feel understood and supported as they navigate their emotions and experiences. Encouraging Self-Reflection: Therapists often prompt clients to reflect on their thoughts and behaviors, fostering greater self-awareness and insight, which can lead to personal growth and change.

I would describe my experience with the provider as extremely helpful for me. I didn’t feel rushed or like I had to do a deep dive into my trauma to understand what it is I’m feeling. I feel like I was given the space to comfortably express myself. It was like talking to someone I’ve known for a long time. Instead of getting the feeling that I thought I would have before deciding to begin therapy. I look forward to future sessions and I’m happy with even the little stuff that we were able to accomplish in our first session.

I would go back simply because Adams was able to instantly proceed with exploring what was needed to make the session a success! There was so much progress for it to be my first session!

I'm just glad to have a black therapist.

Comfortable atmosphere and a clam demeanor make my sessions great. David is a great at listening and getting ideas across. Top knotch.
Verified patientVideo visit
It was great, David is extremely intelligent and a great listener, He helped me think about things in a way that I didn't think of before and would pause me to emphasize and help me dissect certain parts of my explanations and make checks to see if I understood what some of the loaded terminology I used meant to ensure I had a complete understanding, in addition he was extremely empathetic but would also ensure his own candidness when speaking about particular topics to help me understand my own actions. I was also surprised by just how thorough just his questionnaire was before we even spoke a word in the session and we were able to touch on all my future goals. I had a great time I feel like I learned a lot and I will be looking forward to my next session.
