“David was one of the most helpful and supportive therapists I’ve worked with. I was nervous at first since he was my first male therapist, but he made it easy to open up and made me feel comfortable from the start. He truly listens and isn’t afraid to challenge you when you need it which I really appreciated. He met me where I was without judgment and helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect. My experience with him was incredibly positive and meaningful. I only stopped sessions because I relocated out of state. If you’re looking for someone who is real, compassionate, and truly invested in your healing, I highly recommend David and New Hope Counseling.”

Getting to know David Bolanos

David’s story started right here in Orlando. Growing up as a first-generation Hispanic-American, David struggled with feeling settled. Internally, he searched to find the balance between two very different cultures. Externally, his home life was constantly in limbo, as he moved from home to home due to financial hardships. Through these difficult seasons he learned how to empathize with those who are in uncertain and challenging seasons as he was. He also realized the importance of learning resiliency and how it shaped his view of becoming more than his past and circumstances. Psychologist Carl Jung once said, “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” With that in mind, the hope and plan is to move towards one’s ideal, true self; moving from feeling stuck to feeling empowered. After earning his bachelor’s degree, David started down the path of becoming a pastor. However, in his time serving with young adults and youth ministry at a local church, David discovered he enjoyed the care aspects of pastoring much more than teaching. He left his role at the church to start working as a social worker at a local homeless shelter downtown. There, he worked alongside families to help navigate them through the difficult season of homelessness and to help reintroduce them to society as a professional and secure stable housing for them. He has also worked at a psychiatry office in Winter Park, where he gained insight from psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health counselors into different types of treatment modalities, theoretical orientations, and options of care for clients. David is a male bilingual, first-generation Hispanic-American counselor. David enjoys cycling on his road bicycle, trail and road running, reading both fiction and non-fiction books, going to the Disney parks with his wife, exploring nature in local and state parks, and having game nights with friends.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My speciality is working with those who have experienced trauma; how negative events, experiences and memories still have an emotional impact on use now. My hope is to create a safe space for clients in which we can explore the deeper rooted issues that can often be the source of our, anxiety, depression, sadness, low self-worth, etc. I often use a combination of evidence-based, Humanistic, and psychodynamic treatments. This helps us gain a better understanding of how they way in which we were raised by our primary caregivers in-turn affects our relationships as adults; we repeat what we were shown. I also like to discover the deeper meaning behind why we do the things we do using psychodynamic approaches.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Clients can expect to feel heard, understood and accepted. Clients can also expected to be given, taught, and shown ways to identify and process their emotions. Clients can expect to be met with warmth and sincerity, but also to be challenged to grow and become more. I like to focus on not just the symptoms a person is experiencing, but also the roots. I like to learn and discover the 'why' behind why we do the things we do in relationships. I look for patterns, habits and cycles a person has and how it affects them negatively. I don't just stop there, I also like to help people discover new, healthier patterns, cycles, and habits

David Bolaños is an incredible therapist! I only ended my time with him because I moved. I was with him for over a year, and he taught me how to have better empathy and connect more with others. He also pinpointed my exact issue with anxiety, and he walked me through very tangible steps to get me into a much healthier headspace. David’s overall demeanor is one of approachability. He calmly listened to me, and he respectfully challenged some notions of mine when he thought it was appropriate. He is not demeaning, he is not rude, he is not rushed. For anybody who chooses David, you will find that he is a helpful guide through many of life’s anxieties. It was truly a blessing to have him as my therapist, as he helped me walk through some of my hardest times. I am happy for whoever will have him as their therapist in the future!
David was incredibly kind and patient. He listened and cared intently. He made my experience comfortable and within 10 minutes was able to bring out profound realizations of my situation before I even knew it.
