Getting to know David Coplans

Navigating through life's transitions can be challenging for everyone. It's entirely normal to feel somewhat lost during these times. I firmly believe that within each person lies the strength and capability to adapt and overcome these hurdles. Over the last seven years, I've had the privilege of supporting children and teenagers as they work through the pressures of school and their social lives. My goal is always to ensure they feel truly listened to and understood. Far too often, these young individuals share how their attempts to express their feelings are met with dismissal or criticism. I earned my Master’s in Counseling Psychology from John F. Kennedy University, which has equipped me with a strong foundation to support my clients effectively. Working primarily in school settings, I incorporate Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Play Therapy into my approach. I recognize that the relationships and social dynamics experienced by children and teens are deeply intricate. Therefore, I am committed to exploring a wide array of tools and resources to assist them effectively. Additionally, my experience extends to working with children and teenagers on the autism spectrum within the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) framework. In this capacity, I focus on helping them navigate their emotions and develop coping strategies for moments when they feel overwhelmed or find it challenging to articulate their feelings. In all aspects of my work, I strive to create a supportive and empathetic environment where every child and teenager can feel valued and empowered to face life's challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My goal is to help you feel heard and understood. I take a collaborative strength-based approach to therapy, which means we will work together to explore your goals and identify individual strategies that work best for you. Therapy is a personal journey, and we will go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the beginning we focus on building our therapeutic relationship, helping us create a plan for our work together. Sessions will be guided by your needs and goals as we will explore your thoughts, emotions and behaviors as we introduce tools and/or strategies that may support you. As we proceed, we will reflect on your progress, as the goal is help you feel supported while building the skills and insights you need to create a healthier life.
