Dr. David Head, PhD

Psychotherapist
UT
Change is inevitable and painful. Suffering is optional. We can manage change together. I specialize in social disillusionment, existential dissonance, alternate lifestyles, and radical authenticity. Outside of my practice as a counselor, I am an artist, vintage vehicle mechanic, novice outdoorsman, and traveling nomad marriage escapist. My approach I may be an expert in human behavior, but you are the expert in your life. So, I take a collaborative, flexible, and strength-based approach to empower you to navigate life challenges effectively and independently. In talk therapy, our focus is on getting you equipped with tools and mindset to overcome personal and professional obstacles alone. My focus You did what is expected of you, good. Checked all boxes. Done 'all the things'. Yet, life disappoints. You face a great 'now what?' Why go at it alone? I work with adults in all stages of life transition, where we find courage, recover motivation, possess self-love, develop discipline, generate purpose, create meaning, and make connections. My communication style You can expect me to use attention, intelligence, and curiosity to challenge status quo ways of thinking. It may surprise you how non-judged, received, and safe you feel by it. I commit to transparency when it comes to our work. Candor in the rest. I will meet you where you are. Change is uncomfortable enough; therapy really doesn't have to be. My journey to mental healthcare As a kiddo, straight on into adulthood, applause and approval were as fundamental to my survival as oxygen and water. Counseling at first was based on my need to be seen as good. My doctoral program faculty changed my view. Spoiler, it wasn't from their curriculum. I didn't want to be good just to survive. I wanted to be useful. Even if bad.
