Getting to know David Laughlin

Dave Laughlin earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Iowa and his Master’s degree in Counseling from Reformed Theological Seminary. Dave is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida. Dave is also currently a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Louisiana. As a counselor with LCS and father of three (his oldest is 15, his youngest is 11), Dave is particularly passionate about seeing people thrive and helping them live out of exactly whom God has created them to be. Dave also believes there’s something incredibly transformative about creating a safe space for a person to name and process their emotions in the presence of someone who is eager to validate their experience. Because woundedness (at any age) can mark us significantly, Dave is eager to help individuals enter into the broken parts of their story that are in need of healing. Dave has counseling experience working with individuals, couples, and group therapy sessions. Dave’s counseling approach is integrative in nature: he uses Attachment Theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), narrative and cognitive behavioral strategies to help people resolve trauma and develop healthy relationships. In his free time, Dave enjoys being with family or friends, going for a run or watching Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball games.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients that work with me can expect a compassionate, calm, and nonjudgmental space where you’re encouraged to show up exactly as you are. I believe you are the expert on your own life, so my approach is collaborative rather than directive—I won’t tell you what to do, but I will walk alongside you as we explore your experiences, emotions, and goals at a pace that feels comfortable. I focus on building a genuine, trusting relationship, because I believe meaningful change grows from feeling deeply heard and understood. Our sessions may involve gentle reflection, open-ended questions, and moments of pausing to really sit with your feelings or insights. I view my role as someone who can offer steadiness, curiosity, and respect as you gain clarity on what truly matters in order to take next steps toward the life that you desire. For privacy and consent reasons, all patients age 18+ are required to book their own appointments. If you need assistance or have any questions about this policy, please reach out directly to our office for support.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process is grounded in creating a safe, supportive relationship where you feel genuinely heard from the very beginning. In our first few sessions, we’ll spend time getting to know one another and exploring what brings you to therapy, what you hope for, and what feels most important for us to focus on together. I follow your lead, so each session is shaped by what you’re experiencing that week—sometimes we might unpack a recent event or strong emotion, other times we might slow down to notice patterns, clarify your needs, or perhaps sit in a place of woundedness where healing still needs to take place. You can expect a welcoming space where I offer invitational questions along with opportunity to view your present circumstances through a new or different lens. My goal isn’t to direct you but to walk alongside you with care and compassion as you reflect on your experiences and seek to take steps toward a life that brings you meaning, purpose and significance.
