I often work with thoughtful, introspective people who feel stuck in patterns they can’t quite understand. You might struggle with anxiety, self-doubt, relationship challenges, or a sense that you’re living according to expectations that don’t fully reflect who you are. I tend to work well with people who are curious about themselves and interested in understanding the deeper patterns shaping their lives. Many of my clients are thoughtful and self-reflective individuals who want more than quick coping strategies. They’re looking for space to explore their inner world and create meaningful change in how they relate to themselves and others. I work especially well with clients exploring identity, emotional expression, relationships, and personal growth. I also have a particular interest in working with men who want to understand the impact of cultural expectations around masculinity and develop a healthier relationship with themselves and others. Over the years I’ve come to believe that meaningful change often happens when we slow down and become curious about our inner lives. Therapy can be a place to reflect, make sense of patterns that may have developed over time, and begin living in a way that feels more authentic and fulfilling.

Getting to know David Olmstead

I often work with thoughtful, introspective people who feel stuck in patterns they can’t quite understand. You might struggle with anxiety, self-doubt, relationship challenges, or a sense that you’re living according to expectations that don’t fully reflect who you are. I tend to work well with people who are curious about themselves and interested in understanding the deeper patterns shaping their lives. I also have a particular interest in working with men who want to understand the impact of cultural expectations around masculinity and develop a healthier relationship with themselves and others. What should a new client know about working with you?

My work is influenced by psychodynamic therapy and an integrative, experiential approach. In practice, this means we explore not only what’s happening in your life right now, but also the deeper patterns and experiences that may have shaped how you relate to yourself and others. I draw from several approaches including relational therapy, somatic awareness, mindfulness, and trauma-informed practices. Sometimes we focus on thoughts and patterns, and other times we pay attention to emotions, body sensations, or dreams as ways of understanding your inner world. Rather than focusing only on symptom relief, I’m interested in helping clients develop insight into the deeper dynamics shaping their lives. As that awareness grows, people often find that change begins to happen more naturally. Therapy can be challenging work, but it can also be meaningful, creative, and even enjoyable at times. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe enough to explore honestly and develop a deeper understanding of yourself.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In the beginning, we spend some time understanding what’s bringing you to therapy and what you hope might feel different in your life. Sometimes people arrive with a clear issue they want to work on, and other times there’s just a sense of feeling stuck or overwhelmed. The first few sessions help us get a clearer picture of what’s been going on and what patterns might be involved. As we continue working together, therapy becomes a space to slow down and explore those patterns more deeply. Some sessions may focus on things happening in your life right now—stress, relationships, work, or family—while others look at longer-standing experiences that may still be shaping how you feel or respond to things. I tend to take an active role in sessions. I’ll ask questions, share observations, and help connect pieces that may not be obvious at first. Over time, the goal is to help you better understand yourself and begin making changes that feel more aligned with who you are and how you want to live.
