Getting to know David Sher
Life can be beautiful and exciting, but sometimes we find that many of the issues we face can cause us to get stuck. In the instances where these issues are impacting our daily life, having a therapist can help us break out of negative thought patterns and emotional disconnection. Through therapy we can gain deeper insights into our past history, our present pain and work towards a brighter future. With an office in Teaneck, NJ and a virtual office online, Sher Counseling Services works with adolescents, adults and couples of all ages. In addition, we are pleased to provide an Early Relationship Counseling to all newly-engaged or newly-married couples who want to ensure that they begin this deepest stage of their relationship with necessary tools to build and maintain a meaningful emotional connection.

You can expect a genuine experience with an open-minded, non-judgemental therapist who will utilize best-practices to help you gain clarity and control over whatever brings you in.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to each client's unique needs and goals. In our first few sessions, we'll spend time getting to know one another, understanding what brings you to therapy, exploring your history, and identifying what you hope to achieve.
For couples, I primarily use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an evidence-based approach that helps partners identify the underlying emotions and patterns that keep them stuck. Together, we'll work to strengthen emotional connection, improve communication, rebuild trust, and create a more secure and supportive relationship. I will also draw from the Gottman Method as well.
For individual therapy, I draw primarily from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). We'll identify unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors, develop practical coping strategies, and build psychological flexibility so you can respond more effectively to life's challenges while moving toward the values and goals that matter most to you.
Throughout the process, I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where you feel heard, understood, and supported. Therapy is an active partnership, and we'll regularly check in on your progress and adjust our work together to ensure it continues to meet your needs.
