Getting to know David Weidenborner

Offering psychotherapy to help adults manage whatever life throws at them. From once-in-a-lifetime dilemmas to lifelong challenges, I’m here to help you through it all. I have experience working with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, personality disorders, workplace stress, and many other concerns. I am licensed in NY and WA and can provide therapy services to patients located in either state at the time of session. I hold a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from St. John Fisher University. Using an eclectic style of therapy, I pull from different approaches to meet the needs and goals of each person. Several therapies I gravitate toward, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), and Existential Therapy, focus on open-ended discussions to shift perspectives or re-conceptualize difficult past events. In other instances, I may use a more structured approach using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to track thoughts, feelings, and behaviors so we can understand their interconnectedness to alleviate negative thoughts and emotions while increasing healthy behaviors. Underlying any approach is a culturally competent foundation of empathetic support.

What should a new client know about working with you?

At the core of my therapeutic approach is a focus on allowing you to grow, through a variety of treatment styles. Therapy is a space where you can feel safe being yourself. It allows people to explore difficult parts of their lives and gain a deeper understanding that can bring about meaningful change. I appreciate that some people engage in therapy to address an isolated, well-defined issue; others begin after sensing that something is “off” in their life and needs to change. I look forward to exploring your goals and collaborating in our work to achieve them.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session may start with checking in about recent events in your life and the impact they are having on your mental and emotional wellbeing. After this we might revisit unfinished conversations from the previous session and/or explore progress with treatment goals. Generally, I do encourage work between sessions. This may vary depending on what goals we are working on. If we are working on mindfulness, your homework may be to take a walk and count how many times your mind is distracted. If we are exploring specific events from your past, homework may go deeper, using writing exercises to dive into the emotions surrounding memories.
