What should a new client know about working with you?

Have you ever found yourself saying "why do I do that?" or "what was I thinking?" or "why can't I just ....?" or "how can I cope with...?" Dawn believes all behavior has meaning. We cannot change maladaptive behaviors without understanding what drives them through identifying the habits/patterns that once served us well. Often, maladaptive behaviors are a response to an unmet need (to be loved, to feel lovable, to feel understood, to feel safe, to feel worthy, to feel I belong, etc). The emotions that accompany unmet needs tend to be anger, fear, anxiety, panic, sadness, and shame. Change happens when two things take place: 1.You identify your needs and learn ways to meet them. 2.You learn how to manage emotions so emotions don't manage you. Dawn utilizes a combination of techniques to help you achieve your goals. These techniques include cognitive behavioral therapy to learn new ways to respond to negative thoughts or situations; narrative therapy to practice making new meaning out of negative experiences; mindfulness to teach your brain to stay present in your body in order to reduce trauma symptoms; exposure therapy to safely reduce symptoms of anxiety and phobias; and coaching to address ADHD and executive functioning challenges.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

It is important to have a phone conversation with me PRIOR to attending your first session. I want to be sure I can meet your specific needs and provide you with knowledge of what to expect when you begin therapy. The consult call takes approximately 10 minutes. Questions I tend to ask during the call include: 1. What brings you to therapy? 2.Have you had therapy before? If so, what worked/what didn't? 3.Do you prefer in person or Telehealth? I will share the cost of each session, my style and types of therapy provided, my recommendation of who should attend the first session (if a minor or someone seeking family sessions), and an overview of confidentiality and HIPAA. If therapy is court ordered, we will discuss the requirements of the court and the communication I will and will not provide in any report the court requires. The first few sessions are designed to create a safe space to identify challenges and goals. The information you share will help guide the treatment plan, and it is okay not to share everything all at once. Trust is earned and takes time to develop. Healing and growth is similar to a marathon rather than a sprint. Together, we will create a plan of how to structure future sessions in order to achieve your goals. I encourage feedback at all our sessions in order to be sure your needs are met and you are making progress.
