Dean Williams, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
Most of my clients are grappling with grief, anxiety, relationship, or career issues. The type of therapy I find most helpful is called ACT. I am Dean Williams, licensed as a therapist in Oregon and California and as a counselor in Oregon. My approach ACT stands for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. It involves committing to changes in whatever psychological or external factors keep one from living a full life based on personal values. The ACT workbook I use with clients is *Reclaim Your Life: Acceptance & Commitment Therapy in 7 Weeks* by Carissa Gustafson. My focus ACT skills help with grief, anxiety, stress, and relationships. These skills emphasize improving mindfulness, coping, and impulse control. Regarding relationships at home and work, my clients learn ways to manage and resolve conflicts and develop healthy boundaries. I also offer career counseling to address issues such as career decisions, family influences on career, and strengths development. My communication style The tone of my sessions tends to be somewhere between casual and professional. It is warm, and I try to add humor. At least initially, it is my job to keep the conversation tied to developing ACT skills. Sometimes that connection is loose, and sometimes we refer often to the workbook. My journey to mental healthcare I went to graduate school to become a therapist when I turned 50. I am now 67 and semi-retired. It is very satisfying to help people acquire lifelong skills for living a richer life and feeling better. My goals for you With ACT, the primary goal is a fuller life. Some clients are disappointed that feeling better, often the motivation for starting therapy, is not the main focus. But feeling better is nurtured from the very beginning and comes at its own, often unpredictable, pace.
