Getting to know Debbie Kirkwood

Hi there, I'm Debbie! My name is Debbie Kirkwood, and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor. I hold a PhD in General Human Services from Capella University and a Master's in Community Psychology from Norfolk State University. Having been in the mental health field for many years, I have worked with people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds and cultures. My approach to therapy depends on the presenting issue and the client's motivation for change. Each person is unique and responds differently to various approaches. I believe in meeting clients where they are, not where I want them to be. My approach My primary therapeutic methods are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy. I also incorporate homework assignments and various strategies to reinforce what we discuss during sessions. My focus Most of my clients come to me dealing with job stress, relationship stress, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and everyday life challenges. My communication style Clients appreciate my commitment to helping them, and I often use humor to ease the process and build trust. I'm not a therapist who simply nods along-I use my skills to challenge you to be your best self. My journey to therapy During my 21 years of military service, I worked with people from all walks of life, supporting sailors through their trials and tribulations. This experience naturally led me into the field of psychology. It's true what they say: ?If you love your work, you will never work another day.? Helping others is something I truly love to do. Throughout my journey, I've had the privilege of working with many individuals from various backgrounds and cultures. I believe everyone has the potential to be happy and healthy, and it gives me great pleasure to be part of that process.
