Getting to know Deborah Kirkland

I’m Deborah Kirkland, a Licensed Professional Counselor with over eight years of experience in a non-profit trauma center. I specialize in helping clients who have experienced childhood abuse, neglect, and other adverse life events. I have worked with a diverse population across gender, race, religion, and socioeconomic backgrounds. My approach is rooted in building a trusting therapeutic relationship and working collaboratively to create personalized treatment goals. I hold a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, a Master’s in English, and a Master’s in Teaching, all from Stephen F. Austin State University. Additionally, I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University. Passionate about the human experience, I am dedicated to helping others develop the skills to navigate life’s challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

"My clients seek healing and recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, people pleasing behaviors, codependency, and anger issues among others. I believe in a strengths-based approach to treatment wherein we examine the client’s best resources that they are already utilizing. At the end of a session, a client can expect to leave with a plan in place. In our initial therapy appointment, I like to gather a life history as well as an overview of current symptoms and functioning. After that, much of my focus on the first few appointments are to focus on self-care including relaxation and mindfulness practices. After that I like to dive into skills building which can include cognitive behavioral approaches as well as other skills (such as developing boundaries or assertive communication skills) depending on the needs of the client. Finally, during the last stages of counseling I like to put it all together and evaluate what needs to be done next to achieve maximum healing. My therapy style is welcoming and non-judgmental. I believe in offering clients unconditional positive regard. My clients tell me that they always feel better at the end of each session after talking to me. "

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.
