Getting to know Debra Villar

Growing up in a large family and being a working mother of three has taught me early on the importance of work/life balance. I hold a Master's in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University and am licensed in the State of New York. With over 17 years of experience, I have worked with young adults, adults, couples, and families. I have experience addressing mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, stress management, substance abuse, relationship challenges, and life stressors. I thrive on building relationships and empowering others to recognize their strengths.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My hope is that with each session, my patients will walk away knowing they have been heard in a safe environment. That with each session, there is growth and opportunity to seek new perspectives and by building rapport and staying open to the process, progress will follow.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach to therapy first and foremost is to build a connection through honesty and compassion. I often incorporate various modalities as I do not believe there is a "one size fits all" approach. Every person I meet is unique in their own way, therefore tailoring therapy sessions is vital to the process.

Debra is an extremely personal therapist who always explained things to me in an accessible way. She helped me reframe my thinking on family situations and gave me some "a-ha" moments I carry with me.
Debra is a pleasure to work with. My partner and I feel fortunate to have found her during a difficult time in our relationship. For the past 5 months, we've learned more about ourselves as individuals and as a couple. With her guidance, we've improved our communication skills and conflict resolution. Debra is attentive, open minded, aware, empathetic, and non-judgmental. Her down to earth personality is inviting and promotes trust. We are grateful for her help. We can now turn the page and begin a new chapter with a refreshing sense of hope, peace, and clarity!
I recieved therapy remotely with Deb for around a year. Deb always showed genuine concern and interest and helped me toward my goals of gaining self confidence and boundary setting. Deb developed a therapeutic plan with me based on my goals which helped me to have direction through therapy. Scheduling was never an issue and everything was very simple to set up. Sessions were always on time. Overall Deb was a fantastic and highly professional therapist that I am more than happy to recommend!
Debra will always hold a special place in my heart. She has helped me grow so much, by providing coping mechanisms, emotional guidance, and she made me feel seen when i felt invisible to the world. I’ve seen her for a few years now on and off, and she always is willing to give her 110% in order to help anyone who wants, desires, and needs help. She was always willing to work around my schedule when she was able to, but always checked up on me regardless, which made me feel like she really did care for me. A big part of the reason i am who i am today, is because of how much Deb helped me and guided me. She w helped me realize so much, but never judged me and never made me feel judged, but instead, made me feel like I could always go to her and she was my safe space, with no judgment, but instead constructive criticism and love, which is what I truly needed. ??
Deb was amazing. Always so patient with me. Easygoing. Very perceptive and offered the best solutions tailored made just for me. She was always very flexible with her schedule to accommodate mine. She helped identify, break down and unpack so much emotion I was holding in a healthy manner. So grateful for her.
