Demisha Forrester, MCoun

Psychotherapist
NY
I work with adolescents, young adults, and adults navigating anxiety, stress, trauma, low self-esteem, relationship and family challenges, difficult life transitions, and experiences of feeling stuck, unheard, or uncertain about what comes next. My background also includes working with individuals and families navigating complex mental health concerns and community-based systems. I earned my Master’s degree in Forensic Mental Health Counseling from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, collaborative, and person-centered. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and other therapeutic approaches based on each client’s individual needs, strengths, and goals. I believe therapy should be a space where you feel heard, respected, and supported while also having opportunities to better understand yourself and create meaningful change. Together, we can explore the experiences and patterns affecting your well-being, strengthen your ability to cope with challenges, and help you move toward greater confidence, clarity, and emotional wellness.

Getting to know Demisha Forrester

What should a new client know about working with you?

You can expect me to meet you with warmth, curiosity, and without judgment. I understand that beginning therapy—and talking openly about difficult experiences—can feel uncomfortable, so I prioritize creating a space where you can gradually build trust and feel comfortable being yourself. My style is collaborative and supportive. I will listen closely to what you are experiencing while also helping you recognize patterns, identify strengths, explore new perspectives, and develop practical ways of responding to challenges. I do not believe therapy should look exactly the same for every person, so I tailor our work to your needs, experiences, and goals. Most importantly, I want you to feel that your voice matters in the therapeutic process. We will work together rather than having therapy feel like something that is simply being done to you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions focus on getting to know you and developing a fuller understanding of what brings you to therapy. We may discuss your current concerns, important relationships and experiences, relevant history, existing coping strategies, strengths, and what you would like to change or better understand. Together, we will identify goals for therapy and develop an approach that reflects your individual needs. Depending on your concerns, sessions may include exploring thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, and past experiences; identifying patterns that may be contributing to current difficulties; developing coping and emotional regulation skills; and practicing new ways of approaching challenges. I regularly check in about your progress and how therapy is feeling for you. As your needs and goals evolve, our work can evolve as well. My goal is to create a process that balances reflection and deeper understanding with practical strategies you can apply outside of the therapy room.
