Getting to know Denise Donaldson

I became a clinical social worker after earning my Master's degree from Fordham University in 1998. I am also a Board Approved Clinical Supervisor who trains other therapists. Over the years, I have worked in various settings, including private practice, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric hospitals, schools, foster care, adoption services, HIV/AIDS support, crisis intervention, and cancer care. My experience also includes working with clergy and providing community mental health services. This diverse background enables me to offer customized therapeutic experiences tailored to the unique needs of my clients.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, collaborative, and attentive. Most of my clients even think I'm funny! And I do believe humor is an important healing intervention. I start with asking HOW before we dive into WHY. How can you feel better? How can we build some new skills? How can I cope better with this? Once you feel a little more stability and comfort, we can dive into why this happened. Why did it affect you so much? Why did you feel that way? Asking those questions at the proper time can unlock new understanding about the way you tick so that you can manage future situations with a new sense of self-awareness, grace, self-compassion, and resiliency.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We will start our first hour session, beginning the assessment. That means me asking a lot about your current life and your history. I also welcome you to ask questions about me, because you should know something about the person you share your inner world with! From there, I formulate an initial diagnosis, which may change over time due to new information or progress. I typically see clients weekly for talk therapy for 45-55 minutes, and after some period of stability, we will graduate to bi-weekly or even monthly as it becomes appropriate to do so.

More information on payments and coverage

Our practice, Tau Counseling Services of Maryland, uses an EMR and insurance claims/billing service called Headway. When you schedule with me, you agree to allow us to register you for a client portal on Headway so that we can bill your insurance after each session. Within 24 hours of scheduling with me through ZocDoc, you will receive an email inviting you to confirm your client portal on Headway. Here you will be asked to enter a form of payment to cover deductibles and copays. We will verify that your specific plan covers mental health services or set you up for self-pay. Once that is verified, we will take care of billing your insurance after each session, or, if you are self-pay, we will provide you with a superbill if you are using your out-of-network benefits. We cannot see anyone with Medicare, Medicare Advantage or Medicaid at this time. We are OUT-OF-NETWORK with the BCBS FEDERAL EMPLOYEE PLAN.
