Getting to know Denise Etherton

Finding a therapist you can identify with, feeling heard and accepted, can be a challenging feat. Therapists are not one size fits all. We are people with problems, just like you. I offer you over 20 years of experience in the mental health and substance abuse treatment world. I earned my undergraduate degree in psychology in 2001 and my Master's in Professional Counseling from Lindenwood University in 2006. With 10 years of experience working in a hospital setting, I also have a solid understanding of possible medical issues you might need to be referred for. After gaining more life experience, I became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2016 and opened my private practice. I can't tell you all the answers to life's problems, but together we can determine the best decisions for you in particular. Your goals and values are worth exploring. Your likes and dislikes matter. Your happiness is not selfish.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My focus is your success in therapy. I use a technique called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) therapy which is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The purpose of this therapy is to accept that we have emotions in life that are up and down; no matter the emotion, we come to accept those emotions and continue to move closer to our values-those core beliefs that make us who we are. The closer we are living to our values, the more balanced we feel while living rich, full lives. CBT is an evidence-based treatment for many issues spanning from anxiety & depression to pervasive, persistent mental illness. It is also very effective in treating substance use disorders.

More information on payments and coverage

Payment is due after each session and will be charged with your card on file for any portion of patient responsibility. Receipts will be provided at the time of the charge. This typically takes place 2-4 weeks after the session, once your insurance has had a chance to process the claim. We try our best to verify eligibility, but it is ultimately your responsibility to check coverage and out-of-pocket costs for services. For out-of-network visits, you will be billed at the provider’s self-pay rate, and we can provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement based on your plan’s benefits.

Very understanding and interactive with me. Kind and direct with questions that I need to answer as far as therapy is concerned.
In our first meeting, I felt immediately seen, heard, and valued. She was authentic from the start, which made it so that I didn't feel I had to pretend. She was direct, but balanced with warmth, humor, and genuine curiosity. She is interested in doing the work. I look forward to working with her and seeing where this journey takes us.
She was very informative about what she thinks is going on and listens very well. I feel comfortable talking to her about my issues.
I'm so appreciative of how Denise works as a partner with me to find real strategies and solutions to deal with my struggles. Most constructive therapy I've ever been a part of.
Denise is a fantastic therapist. I really get a lot out of our sessions and consider myself very lucky to have found her. Supportive, realistic, and honest.

I have had a lot of therapists in my life and Denise is by far the best! She is so kind, she calls me out on my stuff, and I can tell she truly cares! She has helped me grow and process my thoughts, feelings, and emotions. I can recognize them and acknowledge them in the moment, but also set them aside and process them later when I am in the right head space.
