Psychotherapist
TX
Hello, I am Denise M. Filer, MSW, LCSW-S. I have been a therapist for almost 30 years. I use an eclectic approach because people do not need the same methods; a combination of approaches is what I feel benefits the client most. My approach I believe that narrative therapy is a great place to start. Tell me your story, and together we will define what will work best for you. I find that these approaches work well for most people: DBT, CBT, solution-focused, culturally aware, strength-based, motivational, and mindfulness. My focus I enjoy working with people experiencing life changes, depression, and anxiety, helping them find solutions and resolutions that work for them as couples or individuals. My communication style I create and hold a safe space for people. I encourage them to be their own advocates in this space. I am very direct yet appropriate to the situation and the person. I always ask if they understood what I meant or said to avoid any misunderstanding. My journey to mental healthcare As a child, I did a lot of community work, which continued into adulthood. I was initially going to be an interpreter for the deaf until I heard a social worker give a presentation-that was it for me. I knew I wanted to be a clinical social worker, and that has been my path for 30 years. My education I earned my Bachelor's and Master's in Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University. My goals for you I ask what you would like to accomplish as a goal in therapy. I make you aware that you are in charge of your therapy and goals. We can set them together if you need guidance, but I leave that up to you. I want my clients to feel empowered. My first session with you Often, people say, ?I don't know what to tell you? or ?what do you want to know?? I tell them I go where you want, and it doesn't have to be in order-you can share what you need to in your story.
