Getting to know Denise Kapel

I support hope and self-determination as my clients pursue their therapeutic goals and well-being. What should a new client know about working with you?

Where applicable, I interweave psychotherapy with Expressive Arts Therapy. My practice’s name, The Spotted Hawk Counseling, PLLC, refers to Walt Whitman’s poem, “Song of Myself” in which he related to the “untranslatable” in a hawk’s cry. Creative self-expression can give rise to insight and provide a path to healing and greater self-acceptance. Whether you are here for talk therapy or experiential creative work, I provide a safe space for you to confront life’s challenges and receive therapeutic support.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In addition to licensure as a mental health counselor in WA and OR, with an MA from a CACREP-accredited university, I am a National Certified Counselor, Board Certified TeleMental Health provider and a GMHS (WA). I am also experienced in supporting domestic/intimate partner violence survivors. Currently, I am working toward the international Registered Expressive Arts Therapist credential. The modalities I use with clients include Person-Centered Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Focused CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention, Mindfulness, Gestalt Therapy and Narrative Therapy, as well as Expressive Arts Therapy.
