What should a new client know about working with you?

I am warm, but I am not vague. You will leave sessions with something concrete, not just a feeling that you talked. I also do not use one approach for everyone. What helps a nine year old who falls apart after school is not what helps a couple who has stopped talking, and neither of those is what helps an adult who has been carrying something quietly for years. I have a wide set of tools and I match them to you, not the other way around. I will always tell you plainly what we are doing and why. You are allowed to tell me something is not working. That is useful information, not a problem. We adjust and keep going. And you do not have to arrive organized. Come in messy. That is normal, and it is a fine place to start.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

First session. Mostly listening. I want the real story, in your words, including the parts you would leave out of a form. By the end we will name one or two things worth aiming at. Next few sessions. We look at the pattern underneath. What sets it off, what you do to protect yourself from it, and where that protection has started costing you more than it gives back. Then we build. This is the skills part. Concrete things you practice between sessions, sized so they are actually doable, adjusted based on what happened when you tried. Along the way. I check in on progress out loud. You should always know what we are working on and whether it is moving. If it is not, we change the plan. Endings. The goal is for you to not need me. When you are handling things on your own, we say so and we finish well.
