Denise Mahasi, MS

Psychotherapist
1979 N Ml St, #105, Naperville, IL
Denise Mahasi is a pre-licensed provider working under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. Denise Mahasi, MS, became a therapist because she has always wanted to know the “why” behind a person: what shapes us, what holds us back, and what moves us forward. For the past two years, she has specialized in anxiety, depression, and trauma/PTSD, while also supporting clients through mood disorders and life changes and adjustments. Denise offers individual, couples, family, and group sessions for children, adolescents, teens, young adults, and adults. She received her MS in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University. “I believe therapy works best when clients feel genuinely heard and understood,” Denise shares, “so I take time to understand each person’s unique experiences, values, culture, relationships, needs, and goals.” Denise knows starting, or restarting, therapy isn’t always easy, especially if a past experience didn’t feel like the right fit. She welcomes questions, feedback, and preferences every step of the way, adapting her approach to what each client needs. Drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Trauma-Focused CBT, she builds a trusting relationship and helps clients develop practical skills to manage emotions and challenge unhelpful patterns. Her style is integrative, collaborative, and culturally responsive, always grounded in a safe, nonjudgmental space. Outside of sessions, Denise is a college cooking competition winner who loves to cook and bake. If she weren’t a therapist, she’d be a lifestyle blogger.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy is a partnership, and I see it as my job to earn your trust rather than expect it. Whatever brings you in, we’ll work together to look at the factors, internal or external, that are getting in the way of the life you want to see. Untangling your story is often the first step toward real change, and I’ll be right there with you as we do it. You don’t need to have it all figured out before your first session. You just need to show up.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We’ll start by getting to know you: what brought you in, what you’ve been carrying, and what you’d like to be different. From there, we’ll set goals together and decide which approaches feel like the best fit, adjusting as we go. Some sessions will be about making sense of hard experiences, and others will focus on tools you can use right away. Real change is a process, not a quick fix, so we’ll check in regularly on how things are going and celebrate the progress along the way.
