What should a new client know about working with you?

I encourage you to tell your story - talk about what brings you to counseling and what you expect from this experience. I listen and ask questions to help clarify why you are here and what you want from this experience. I provide a safe space for you to talk about issues and concerns. I know and understand that coming in to talk with a stranger about difficulties is not an easy thing to do, so I don't rush. As we get to know each other, I will help you move forward, resolve your concerns, and move on with your life. It's not unusual that sometimes initial problems we discuss change, or additional problems might come up. When this happens we address and resolve these concerns.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy with me involves talking about your problems. I ask questions for clarification, I make observations about what may be contributing to your problems and discuss realistic changes you can make to resolve your concerns and move on with your life. Feel free to bring coffee, water, or some other non-alcoholic beverage to the session, as I am often drinking coffee or water when we meet together, and take notes if you'd like. I often assign 'homework' for you to work on outside of our scheduled sessions. This homework is to help you resolve your concerns. I will ask you about how your 'homework' went - what you experienced, what you thought and how you felt about your homework. Usually, sessions are scheduled every other week, giving you time to process our session, work on your homework, and talk about what has happened between sessions.
