Getting to know Derek Barney

I’m a Clinical Mental Health Counselor specializing in addiction, trauma, and grief and loss. I decided to enter this field after personally struggling with substance addiction and the loss of my father at a young age. My goal as a therapist is to help others feel heard and cared for in a nonjudgmental setting while they find their way to who they want to be. I earned my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Phoenix. The majority of my career has been spent working with teens in inpatient programs, and I later transitioned to helping adults in an addiction recovery center. Because of my experiences and specialties, I pursued additional training to make therapy more effective. I am certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Brainspotting, and SMART Recovery. Using the experience I’ve gained from my own journey, the training I’ve received, and my gift of empathy and understanding, I know that together we can work through whatever you’re struggling with.
