Getting to know Dr. Derrick Wayne Smith

I am a Resident Psychiatrist (MD), Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate (LMHCA), and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) who believes that “soul work” is critical for each of us in our life journey. I earned my Doctor of Medicine degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. I recognize the disruptive power that trauma, negative interactions, and maladaptive behavior possess in altering our daily functioning, mental health, and overall evolution. We will work as partners to resolve these difficulties that impair the maximization of your potential.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I only offer online (telehealth) counseling services at this time mostly during weekday afternoons/evenings. Med Management is not provided at this time. Note that the minimum age that I treat is age 16. I do not provide diagnostic testing. Note that we have counseling interns that are open to see clients as well. I have been a medical doctor for just under four years. Prior to such, I was trained as a psychotherapist and worked as a social worker in Los Angeles and Tulsa. My general approach is pretty eclectic and engaging with a focus on building your skills set and improving your approach to the world.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I initially review the brief symptoms intake form and complete a psychological evaluation on the first visit where we'll also determine the reason for your seeking counseling and what you wish to achieve. We'll also determine if we're a compatible fit and how you wish to proceed in frequency of visits.
