Getting to know Dierdre Wallace

I have realized in life-at multiple points, more accurately-that things will fall apart because of a current situation we are experiencing or something from our past finally catching up with us. It is at those moments we come to a crossroad where we can either allow ourselves to continue down a path where our growth remains stunted or courageously go through the messy process of healing. My own personal therapy and what I've learned and continue to learn as a therapist have completely transformed my life. I would argue that there is nothing more valuable than doing deep interior work that transforms our lives for the better, which is why I'm so passionate about this work and love what I do. That is one of the first and most important things I want you to know about me. Because to sit across from another human being and have them share their vulnerabilities, struggles, anger, pain, joy, confusion, sorrows, and successes-I consider it a privilege and an honor, always, when someone allows me to be part of and bear witness to their process. I earned my Master's in Counseling Psychology from John F. Kennedy University, which has further deepened my understanding and commitment to this transformative work.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The space you and I create together is sacred one, one that allows you to show up as your true self, with no judgments, no criticism, only understanding, compassion, authenticity & genuineness—and even sometimes shared laughter. My therapeutic approach recognizes the centrality of culture is paramount for effective therapy. It is important to understand individuals’ backgrounds, race, nationalities, customs, belief systems, and world views as our cultural identities and our experiences greatly influence how we interact with the world, and vice versa. In our work together, we will focus on you as a whole individual, taking into account past traumas and the resulting coping mechanisms to better understand behaviors and determine the course of our work together as we focus both on the mind and the body. My practice integrates experiential attachment, and narrative therapy; eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR); cognitive behavioral therapy; mindfulness; and motivational interviewing. My work is tailored to what resonates with you and what helps you move closer to your goals. This integrative approach will help deconstruct the rigid expectations of self and its belief system in order to live a more free, authentic and creative life. Together we will tailor specific coping strategies to help to improve emotional well-being, therefore implementing meaningful change. I aim to make therapy an authentic experience where your need to be heard, valued, and understood is paramount. I believe that a strong therapist-client relationship is vital for self-discovery, personal growth, and healing.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Part of my job is to learn and know you, your story, understand your perspective, gain insight into problems and obstacles interfering with your personal growth. To guide you always with your best interest at heart. My goal as your therapist is to explore the roots of your distress and to reduce it by helping you see yourself, your environment, and your relationships with increasing clarity. I challenge my clients to open themselves up to change and personal growth by increasing their awareness around their thought processes, their patterns of functioning and their relationship with others. I see my role as both as your guide and a follower in your meaningful and progressive journey to promote change. Connection, peaceful silence, laughter, and resilience are all valuable pieces of this process. I listen closely and empathetically, but I do not stay silent if I feel that I can offer perspective, ideas, or a prompt to help you shift from, or better cope with, the uncomfortable.
