Dominique White, LPC

Psychotherapist
AR
I am an open, affirming therapist who believes that clients are the experts in their own lives but sometimes have so much weighing on them, so they need that outside perspective to help them make sense of their thoughts, feelings, and next steps. I try to create a space where cliens feel seen, heard, and challenged in a way that helps them make the steps necessary to live the life they want. My approach to treatment and care is that I want to get to know all the aspects of a client's life that influence who they are and how they see the world. I believe that we are all multidimensional people, and our families, work, race, gender, ability, and other aspects of who we are influence how we see the world. My approach is also solution-focused, so I help clients challenge their perspectives and tap into strengths that they don't always realize they already possess to change their lives for the better. My ideal client might be struggling with disability-related concerns such as ADD, learning disabilities, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, college transition, and other transition issues, identity issues, and more. My ideal client is open to change, committed, and willing to do the necessary work to become the best version of themselves that they can be.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My communication style is warm, affirming, open, and direct towards my clients during therapy. I have multiple degrees, one being in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (2013) and another in Rehabilitation Counseling-Disability (2020). I have worked for over 11 years serving students with disabilities at a university and helping them navigate issues related to disability, family relationships, stress, anxiety, romantic relationships, and more. Their age ranges from 18 -60. I never saw myself doing this work, but as a person who identifies as part of the disability communication, it has turned out to be such meaningful and purposeful work.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I help clients reach their goals in treatment by encouraging, motivating, and challenging them to implement the things we are working on in therapy. I also try to remind cleints of the strengths they already possess that may help them get to the next level. Sometimes, all you can see is your barriers or struggles and you need to be reminded of the strength you already have that can be used to propel you to the next level! We would spend time getting to know each other, understanding the client's goals and reason for seeking therapy, and outlining how we can work together to help the client begin to see change in their lives within a few months!
