I am Douglas Carmody, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the owner of Now and Zen Wellness in Carrollwood, Florida. Since 2017, I have been working with individuals, couples, and groups to help them navigate life’s challenges and build more fulfilling lives. My specialties include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). These evidence-based approaches give me a wide range of tools to tailor treatment to each person’s unique needs, whether the focus is trauma recovery, anxiety, depression, addiction, men’s issues, relationship concerns, or life transitions. My path to this work began in my undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of South Florida, where I developed a strong foundation in behavioral health and learned the value of meeting people where they are. I’ve facilitated groups in treatment centers, provided psychoeducation and mindfulness practices, and worked closely with individuals from diverse backgrounds. One of the best compliments I’ve received from a client is, “You know how to push without offending,”—a reflection of my balance between being direct and compassionate. Therapy is not about telling someone how to live their life but helping them discover the life they want to create. My role is to provide a safe, supportive space for exploration, insight, and growth. Sometimes that means gently challenging old patterns; other times it means slowing down to practice self-compassion or learning new coping skills. My guiding philosophy is simple: every person deserves care that is respectful, collaborative, and grounded in their values. At Now and Zen Wellness, my mission is reflected in the words: Compassion now, hope ahead. I welcome you to begin your journey here.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel both hopeful and intimidating. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and collaborative space where you can explore your story and work toward the changes that matter most to you. I believe therapy should be practical, compassionate, and tailored to the individual. Clients often describe me as someone who can “push without offending,” which reflects my balance of honesty and gentleness. I will meet you where you are, while also encouraging growth in the direction of your values. I draw from several evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing for trauma. Each of these offers different tools, and together we’ll decide which approaches best fit your needs. Sometimes that means exploring the deeper roots of challenges, while other times it means learning and practicing skills that you can apply right away in daily life. Our first session will focus on understanding your history, your concerns, and your goals. This is also your chance to ask questions and set expectations about how we’ll work together. In ongoing sessions, we may blend reflection, conversation, and skill building, and I may invite you to practice insights or tools between meetings so the progress extends beyond the therapy room. I work with people facing trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship challenges, men’s issues, and life transitions. My style is respectful, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. I believe everyone has the right to self-determination, and therapy is about helping you align your actions with your values so that life feels more authentic and meaningful. Working with me means stepping into a process that is honest, compassionate, and designed to support lasting growth.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When you begin working with me, the process starts with building a foundation of safety and trust. In our first session, I will ask questions about your history, current concerns, and goals for therapy. This gives us a clear picture of what brings you in and what you hope to achieve. It is also your chance to ask me questions and share what is most important for you to feel comfortable in the process. As we move into ongoing sessions, the structure tends to blend exploration, reflection, and skill building. Some days we may focus on understanding patterns in your thoughts, emotions, or behaviors, while on other days we may practice practical tools you can begin using right away. Depending on your needs, we might draw from approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to shift unhelpful thinking, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to clarify your values and increase psychological flexibility, Dialectical Behavior Therapy to build skills for emotion regulation and relationships, or EMDR to process trauma and reduce distress connected to past experiences. I see therapy as a collaborative process. I do not come in with a fixed agenda but instead work with you to determine what feels most relevant and helpful. At times, I may offer gentle challenges or reflections to help you see things from a new angle, while at other times we may slow down and focus on simply creating space for your feelings. I often invite clients to practice skills or reflect between sessions, since real change usually happens not just in the therapy room but in daily life. A typical session is about creating a safe, nonjudgmental environment where you can be honest, explore your concerns, and build new ways of relating to yourself and others. My goal is that over time, therapy provides not only relief from symptoms but also a more profound sense of clarity, resilience, and alignment with the life you want to live.
