“Working with Doug has truly been life changing. From day one, he came across as calm, personable, and genuinely human; not just going through the motions but really connecting. I came in dealing with issues tied to divorce, cancer, and anxiety, and somehow, he made even the hardest conversations feel manageable. He listens closely, laughs with me when it helps, and gently challenges me in ways that actually lead to growth. One of the biggest breakthroughs was realizing how much my parents’ relationship shaped my own patterns. With his help (through meditation, workbooks, and thoughtful conversations), I’ve seen real, meaningful change in my relationships. I leave most sessions feeling encouraged. Doug is empathetic, reliable, and flexible, and I wouldn’t be who I am today without him. I’d recommend him to anyone navigating anxiety, health issues, or major life transitions.”

Getting to know Douglas Rizzo

Douglas Rizzo is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in individual psychotherapy and also acts as parent consultant with respect to parent-child concerns and issues. A graduate of The College of William and Mary, Mr. Rizzo specializes in individual therapy and parent consultations with a child who may be struggling in school, at home, in the community or at school. He has accumulated over forty-six years of experience serving in multiple treatment contexts such jails and prisons, therapeutic foster care, university counseling centers and community mental health centers serving adults, youth and families. He has functioned in various clinical roles such as a jail and corrections counselor, foster care supervisor of families, community mental health and substance abuse counselor, college counselor, home-based family counselor, clinical team lead for families at risk and as a licensed supervising clinician. Mr. Rizzo is a highly interactive and engaging therapist who employs an integrative approach that stresses the quality of the client-therapist relationship by continually monitoring the developing therapeutic alliance and by mindfully cultivating the client-therapist relationship. His therapeutic objective is to help the client develop insight, self-awareness, interpersonal awareness, cognitive harmony, cognitive unity and balance, and mindfulness with the goal of promoting the integration of mind and emotion while encouraging adaptive behavior changes. He embraces, practices and employs a very personalized approach tailored to the needs of each client. With compassion, understanding and "presence". Mr. Rizzo works with each individual to help them develop a greater sense of personal peace that is derived from a cooperation with life and with others rather than by controlling or dominating it, whereby one can develop healthy interactions and relationships with all life around us.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a highly seasoned therapist, I have learned that an integrative approach is not only preferred but the only way to truly help people. One size does not fit all. Only by selecting from multiple counseling frameworks and applying a tailored helping approach can counseling be truly effective. And the ability to successfully accomplish this is a product of experience and time. I work successfully with Asian individuals who contend with acculturation and family trauma issues, complicated grief and loss experiences, and also chronic illnesses. Two niches and very special interests of mine are to help those who are considering a new direction in life such as a career change, life changes or relocation and also neurodivergent individuals. I utilize an integrative approach in helping my clients successfully heal and thrive.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We will begin with an initial intake session, a casual meeting to review the information you provided prior to the initial meeting. We will then continue to gain more insight into you and your concerns by examining the presenting issues and by obtaining a "big picture" of your life (with certainty our past impacts our present). You are your story's author. And it is a very important story for us understand. Only from here can we arrive at the answers you seek. Once we have your story, we will begin to understand how it continues to guide your decisions in life, identify any existing negative patterns, and work towards changing those patterns. In my many years experience of working with people from all walks of life I have observed that we are creatures of habit: we are what we were taught, what we observe, what we are/were exposed to. And these habits are often not in conscious awareness but must be identified in order to effect change. And if counterproductive, hurtful - even harmful- patterns exist, we will work together to understand and change these patterns. How these habits and patterns are changed are unique to the individual and will be explored and understood in the process of therapy and then applied in your life and relationships.
