“Dylan has made me feel comfortable opening up and not judged for my feelings. First time I've ever felt that I'm being shown skills to move past those triggers that would have otherwise sent me into a very dark point. I feel listened to and encouraged that I can move beyond my past.”

Getting to know Dylan Daugherty

When I was in college at Abilene Christian University, a mentor of mine told me that everyone has a story to tell. That includes you-you have your own story to tell, and you tell it better than anyone. In an effort to help you tell your story, I use a method called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). This approach allows my patients to encounter traumatic or negative life experiences in a way that challenges them to increase their distress tolerance, leading to the alleviation of anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and many other clinical concerns. Through engaging in EMDR, you will identify negative belief patterns that may be impacting your life and see them diminish as a result of reprocessing memories and experiences causing distress and dysfunction. You will notice improvements in your mood and relationships as you push beyond what you may currently believe yourself capable of. We all have annoying thoughts and festering feelings. Sometimes, we feel like we can manage, and sometimes life feels too strenuous. I believe my job is to meet you where you are and galvanize you, allowing for the experience of joy and success. Collaboration is the greatest strength we have in our therapeutic relationship. My commitment to you is to create a warm and empathic space while presenting challenges you can face in a way that makes hope a feasible option. I hold a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Abilene Christian University and have experience working with age groups ranging from adolescents to elderly adults, utilizing both individual and group models. I have worked in settings ranging from private practice to inpatient and partial hospitalization. I provide care for a wide array of clinical illnesses, including all types of depression and anxiety, PTSD, and relationship issues.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a collaborative therapist who embraces challenge as an opportunity to grow. My patients and I will always work together and communicate about our relationship periodically so we can evaluate what is working and what is not. In doing this, we improve our dynamic. I encourage all of my clients to set concrete goals, as they are more likely to lead to results. I harp on creating realistic expectations because it is difficult to work in therapy when unreasonable goals are set. I enjoy it when my patients take time to tell stories to ensure I get as much detail as possible, but I am not afraid of silence.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We will engage in an initial interview to begin. We ensure we craft treatment goals which are appropriate and specific to you as my client so that you can feel emotionally attached to these goals. I use EMDR as a method of helping patients alleviate depression, anxiety and relationship issues as well as reprocessing traumatic or negative life events. I often seek to evaluate if EMDR will be a fit for a client first and then, if not, I pivot to a CBT-based approach. In this method, the client is challenged to identify how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are intertwined while allowing room for the client to talk about their life in an open space, free of judgment.
