Edward Chan, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I’m a Licensed therapist and the founder of Unspoken Roots Psychotherapy. I created my practice with a clear mission: to make therapy more accessible, culturally responsive, and genuinely supportive, especially for those who often feel unseen or misunderstood in traditional mental health spaces. With over 10 years of experience across community mental health, hospitals, and academic settings, I’ve worked with individuals navigating anxiety, stress, depression, identity exploration, and relationship challenges. I specialize in supporting Asian American clients and others balancing cultural expectations, family dynamics, and personal goals, though I welcome individuals from all backgrounds. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of what they truly want for themselves. On the surface, it may look like they’re managing. But internally, they’re carrying pressure, self-doubt, or emotional fatigue. In our work together, you won’t have to over-explain your experiences. I strive to create a space where you feel understood, respected, and supported from the start. My approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and grounded in evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT, and ACT. I focus on helping you build practical tools while also exploring the deeper patterns and experiences that shape how you think, feel, and relate to others. Therapy with me is not about “fixing” you. It’s about helping you reconnect with your voice, gain clarity, and move toward a life that feels more aligned and fulfilling. Whether you're navigating a transition, working through longstanding challenges, or simply trying to better understand yourself, I’m here to support you in that process. I offer virtual therapy sessions to clients across New Yorkk and massachusetts, providing a flexible and convenient way to access care. If you’re considering therapy, I invite you to reach out!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel unsure at first. My goal is to make the process feel approachable, supportive, and tailored to you from the very beginning. I provide a nonjudgmental space where you don’t need to have everything figured out. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, stress, relationship challenges, or feeling stuck, we’ll work together to better understand what’s going on and identify practical ways to move forward. My approach is collaborative and grounded in evidence-based practices like CBT, DBT, and ACT. We’ll explore patterns in your thoughts, emotions, and relationships while also building tools you can apply in your daily life. I aim to balance insight with action so that therapy leads to meaningful, lasting change, and not just temporary relief. I also bring a culturally responsive lens into my work. If you come from a background where expectations, family dynamics, or identity feel complex, you won’t have to over-explain your experiences. I strive to create a space where you feel understood and respected. Sessions are 55 minutes and conducted virtually, making it easier to fit therapy into your schedule. I offer both insurance-based and self-pay options and can help you understand your coverage and expected costs. Above all, therapy with me is a partnership. You set the pace, and we’ll focus on goals that feel meaningful to you—whether that’s gaining clarity, improving relationships, managing emotions, or strengthening your sense of self. If you’re considering therapy, you don’t have to be fully ready. Just showing up is enough.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I approach therapy as a collaborative and personalized process. In our first session, I focus on getting to know you—what’s bringing you in, what you’ve been experiencing, and what you’d like to get out of therapy. We’ll talk through your goals and begin identifying patterns that may be contributing to what you’re feeling. From there, we work together to create a plan that feels realistic and meaningful to you. Some sessions may focus on building practical tools—such as managing anxiety, improving communication, or regulating emotions while others may explore deeper experiences, relationships, and patterns that shape how you think and feel. I use evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, and ACT, but tailor them to fit your needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. I also incorporate a culturally responsive perspective, so if your background, identity, or family dynamics play a role in your experiences, we can explore that in a way that feels natural and understood. Throughout our work, I’ll check in regularly to make sure therapy is aligned with your goals and that you’re getting what you need from the process. You can expect a balance of support, honest feedback, and skill-building to help you create meaningful and lasting change. Above all, therapy with me is a partnership. You don’t need to have everything figured out. We’ll work through it together, at a pace that feels right for you.
