Getting to know Edward Poll

I came to therapy through music. In the midst of a career as an opera conductor, I began to notice that my most meaningful moments were spent helping colleagues and friends who had lost faith in their own voices: anxiety, depression, and doubts about who they were without their work would leave them out of rhythm with themselves and those close to them. As a therapist, I find a similar joy in helping people build true confidence in who they are and what they can do. In session, I lead with my ear. We listen for what's said, what isn't, and what keeps coming back, and I'll often reach for a metaphor to help bring things into focus. When it's useful, my training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and meditation can lend an element of quiet and clarity to difficult feelings. Over time, challenges can start to feel like teachers and not just obstacles. Most of the people I sit with are working through anxiety, depression, or an identity in upheaval. Performers, artists, students, and dedicated professionals will find someone who knows the pressures of those worlds from the inside. I hold a BA and MSW from Columbia University, with a Postgraduate Diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music and a Master of Music from Mannes College. Among my credits are two seasons as Resident Conductor of Houston Grand Opera, productions at the Juilliard School, and membership in the advanced cohort of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop.
