Elaine Schlorff, LCSW

Psychotherapist
IL
At Elaine Schlorff Counseling, I provide a warm, supportive space where adults can feel heard, understood, and accepted. I often work with individuals experiencing anxiety, stress, caregiver concerns, life transitions, chronic illness, grief and loss, or the challenges that can arise when life takes an unexpected turn. I believe therapy should reflect the individual, not a one-size-fits-all approach. My work is eclectic, meaning I thoughtfully draw from several therapeutic approaches based on each person’s unique needs, strengths, experiences, and goals. Together, we explore what is happening in your life, identify what may be contributing to feelings of stress or anxiety, and develop practical strategies that feel realistic and meaningful to you. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and grounded in the belief that you already bring important strengths to the therapy process. You do not have to have everything figured out before beginning therapy. We can start where you are and work together toward greater clarity, confidence, and a more manageable way of moving through life’s challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and individualized. I use an eclectic approach, drawing from a variety of evidence-based therapeutic techniques rather than expecting one method to work for everyone. I believe therapy is most meaningful when it reflects who you are, what you are experiencing, and what you hope to gain from our work together. Our sessions may include exploring patterns of thoughts and emotions, developing practical strategies for managing anxiety and stress, strengthening coping skills, practicing mindfulness or relaxation techniques, and finding new ways to approach difficult situations or life changes. Just as importantly, I provide space for you to talk, reflect, and make sense of your experiences without feeling rushed or judged. I view therapy as a process we navigate together. My role is not to tell you how to live your life, but to help you recognize your strengths, gain greater clarity, and develop tools that feel useful and realistic for you. We will begin where you are and adjust our work along the way as your needs and goals evolve.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work begins with getting to know you—not just the concerns that bring you to therapy, but also your experiences, strengths, relationships, and what you would like to be different in your life. During our first few sessions, we will talk about what has been happening, identify the areas you would like to focus on, and begin developing goals that feel meaningful and realistic to you. As therapy continues, our sessions will be shaped by your individual needs and what is happening in your life. We may explore thoughts, emotions, and patterns; practice new coping or communication skills; work through difficult experiences; or simply create space to reflect and gain a different perspective. I may also offer exercises or strategies to use between sessions when they would be helpful. Throughout our work together, we will regularly check in about what is helping and what may need to change. Therapy is not a “one and done” experience or a straight path. It is a process, and we will move at a pace that respects where you are while continuing to work toward the changes that are important to you.
