Getting to know Elam Richter

Are you looking to heal trauma-related distress and understand the patterns beneath what you’re experiencing? If so, I’m likely to be the right therapist for you. I work with my clients in two complementary ways: using skilled EMDR to target trauma-related distress, and also explorative relational therapy informed by psychoanalytic and existential theory to resolve repeating patterns, attachment, identity, and life direction concerns. I work with my clients via an EMDR-focused start, starting with relational-focused work, or doing both kinds of therapy in parallel as client needs evolve.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Our EMDR work may include identifying the memories or triggers most connected to your distress, then using EMDR’s structured processing to help your nervous system reprocess them with less charge and greater safety—this would be done alongside a supportive, authentic, and properly boundaried therapist-client relationship. I work well with adults who are both aiming for lasting relief and a deeper understanding of themselves.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session will involve my getting to know you better and what your own hopes and goals are for therapy; then depending if we are a good fit and If I believe I can offer you what you are looking for, I'll go over and explain the process of therapy, what to expect, and how the logistics of therapy work. As for my therapeutic style, I aim to provide a supportive and empathy based relationship within which the context of all "therapeutic interventions/techniques" are utilized to help you with your goals. I aim too spend most of my time carefully and respectfully listening as I believe this to be the most curative factor in therapy that underlies all other healing factors.
