“I think Elisa strikes a great balance between offering caring and support and providing honest, constructive feedback. I really appreciate the way she approached the stress I was feeling about the political climate. Her focus on self-care, concentrating on local issues and making meaningful changes where possible was refreshing and practical. Our sessions have been incredibly beneficial, and I’m in a much better mental space now than when I first started. Highly recommend. ”

Getting to know Elisa Lederer

Hello and welcome to my practice! My name is Elisa Lederer, and I have over 18 years of experience providing individual psychotherapy services to adults ages 16 and over. I hold a Master's in Clinical Social Work from Fordham University and a Bachelor's degree from Vassar College. Additionally, I earned a Certificate in Marital and Family Therapy from the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy. My approach is client-centered, strengths-based, and trauma-informed. Theoretical frameworks that inform my work include CBT, IFS, family systems, and psychoanalytic. I am a big believer in human resilience. My approach is a collaborative one built on respect, openness, and curiosity. The human capacity to heal and grow continues to leave me in awe. My greatest joy as a clinician is being invited to participate in the healing process and the honor of bearing witness to the possibilities and potentials that come with self-awareness and acceptance. Your life story is uniquely yours-like a tree that has endured and overcome the changing weathers of life and continues to exist in a state of profound resilience. Through our work together, we will discover the gifts of your journey as we work toward greater clarity, self-awareness, and healing. I will listen, ask questions, and give you the space to sit with feelings you may never have had the opportunity or allowed yourself to experience. We will understand the story of you and why you are suffering. Finally, we will develop strategies and tools to allow for a life that feels connected, authentic, and true. To struggle is a human experience, but it does not have to be a lonely one.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The very core of healing is the relationship you and I form. The experience of vulnerability and connection that grows in the therapeutic space is rooted in the ability to listen, comfort, heal and empower. Through warmth, respect, empathy, integrity, reliability, challenge and honesty, the journey to ones true self (the work of therapy) begins. When you step into our therapeutic space, you can expect a non-judgmental and confidential environment where your story is honored. I believe that healing is a holistic journey that encompasses not only the mind, but the body and spirit as well. Through compassionate listening and collaborative exploration, we will work together to uncover the layers of your experience, identify patterns, and develop strategies to cultivate self-compassion, self-regulation, and meaningful growth. During our initial session, we will get to know one another and decide if we are a good match therapeutically.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Compassion, collaboration, curiosity, openness, strength, honesty accountability, humor, patience and guidance. Our sessions will be centered on you. You will use our time to share how you are doing in daily life and connect your experience to the goals we are working toward. At times you will talk. A lot. Sometimes you will sit in silence. I will sit with you. Sometimes you will cry. Sometimes I will ask questions or introduce new perspectives. You may feel like we are having one long conversation--which may be nice. At times, you will not know what to say. That is ok. And through it all, I will be there, holding space, guiding, listening. You will not be alone. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THERAPY A safe space. A place that is all about you. A space where you will be seen. A place where all feelings are welcome. A place where together, we get to explore, excavate, dig deep. A place where you learn to see yourself, and appreciate yourself in new ways. A place where you discover and uncover parts of yourself that may have been asleep or hidden. A place where you learn (or re-learn) the joy of connection, to yourself and to loved ones. A place where you discover the strength and resilience you hold within. A place where you learn, above all, to trust yourself.

I have been seeing Elisa for some time now, and I cannot recommend her enough. She is an incredibly compassionate and thoughtful provider who truly listens and cares. I am a much stronger version of myself because of our sessions together.
I can’t express enough how profoundly Elisa Lederer has impacted my life. As a 55-year-old woman who spent 20 years in a difficult marriage, I was struggling to understand my husband’s behavior and its effect on my well-being. Elisa’s approach, expertise and guidance provided me with the support I needed during a very challenging time. Elisa never pressured me to make any decisions or leave my marriage but instead focused on helping me strengthen my sense of self and build the resilience I needed while in the marriage. Her guidance was instrumental in helping me recognize my husband’s anti-social tendencies, which I had long struggled to understand. Ultimately, I found the courage to leave a marriage that was no longer serving me. I highly recommend her to anyone seeking a therapist but particularly if you are struggling with an abusive partner. She is an expert in every sense of the word.
I went through a particularly tough time with my adopted son, and after seeing many professionals who just didn’t understand what I was going through, Elisa was the one who finally got it. She guided me through a very dark period with empathy and insight. We need more therapists like her out there.
I have done therapy in the past and unfortunately did not feel heard or understood. With Elisa that is completely the opposite. She is open and you can tell she genuinely cares about you and her job. It felt very natural to open up to her and would very highly recommend her.
While Dr. Lederer seemed to be a compassionate provider at first, things soured pretty quickly. I do appreciate how she challenged some of my innate beliefs and encouraged reflection. But she brought up her own political beliefs and views every time she disagreed at all with mine, and eventually made me uncomfortable to openly mention my beliefs. On multiple occasions she refused to acknowledge my experience and many of the things she said she would do she just outright did not. The most upsetting thing was the passive aggressive statements she made to me near the end of our relationship. Dr. Lederer is not particularly open minded and I would not recommend this practitioner to anyone on the younger or more progressive side. I imagine she can provide great care to people who come from a very similar. background or have had a similar experience to her.
I really appreciate Elisa’s approach to therapy, she asks thoughtful questions that lead to fruitful discussions. She offers useful advice that helps navigate the issues we discuss.

Knowledgeable and easy to talk with.
Elisa has helped me negotiate some very difficult situations with my family over the last year and work through past trauma. My confidence and sense of personal power has grown tremendously working with her. I was depressed most days and barely able to get out of bed. Now I am out of my pajamas and thriving in most areas of my life. I appreciate the care you have given me. THANK YOU, REALLY!
Very, very helpful and responsive. Thank you!

Elisa is exactly what you want in a therapist: she's a fantastic listener, she questions and motivates, she cares and nurtures, and above all, she truly helps you sort through the bs and get to the place you want to be in life. She has helped me with almost everything. I’ve seen her for parental issues, family planning, sibling estrangement, familial mental illness, and career change adjustment.
Elisa and I have been working together for 2 years now and the quality of my life has increased dramatically. She is a skilled clinician who is insightful, empathetic, and not afraid to appropriately challenge.
