“Before working with Elizabeth, I wasn't sure if I 'needed' therapy. After 2 years of taking the leap, I have never felt more confident in myself. Elizabeth is an incredible therapist. She is kind, funny, supportive, and open-minded, all while holding you accountable to your goals. She is FULL of wisdom and frameworks to help you understand yourself better. After a session with Elizabeth, I often feel inspired and excited for life. If you are thinking about therapy, unsure what you would talk about but have an instinct it will be good for you, Elizabeth will not only help you get to the root of your issues but also give you tools and resources to enhance your life.”

Getting to know Elizabeth Friedman

Elizabeth Friedman is a licensed mental health counselor in New York with a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from the City University of New York, Baruch College. She specializes in working with children, adolescents, and adults who struggle with anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, low self-esteem, ADHD, and interpersonal skills. Expect an appropriate balance of humor, empathy, and creativity to motivate and guide you in creating the life you want. Please note that she is out of network, so be sure to double-check that your insurance reimburses if you'd like.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I’m a mix of an optimistic cheerleader and a realistic teacher with a sense of humor and a direct, no-nonsense approach. Therapy is an emotional balancing act and, just like any skill you’ve ever learned, it takes time to master. You need to put in the time and not just during sessions. We will be detectives, working together to figure out what’s stopping you from achieving optimal balance in your life and identifying the small, achievable tasks you can accomplish during the week to get you to your goals faster. Imagine you were learning how to do a handstand. If your legs go too forward or backward, you’ll fall. But in those moments when you are perfectly aligned, you are at peace. Therapy may feel strange until it becomes natural to you. I will guide you through every drop of effort you put in and help you yield results that will last you for the rest of your life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your time is precious and so is your money therefore I give FREE phone consultations as a must in order to make sure we vibe well and I can be certain I can help you with what you're looking for. The first thing I ask is what your availability is to make sure we both can commit to a time to meet and give our full attention to. You don't have to commit to any amount of time with me so if you ever change your mind that's okay! Once you feel I am the right therapist for you we will set up the sessions as follows: Session #1: Intake- overview of why you've come to therapy. From that point on, I am officially on your journey and I see ourselves as 2 detectives figuring out what brought you to this point in your life. This will be a collaborative effort because you know yourself better than me. I'm here to give you support, feedback and help you ask questions you may have never asked yourself in order to figure out who you are and begin to feel better. Get ready to dig for answers! Session #2: Your past History as it pertains to your current circumstance today. We will jump into the time machine and I will get to know you a little better. Remember, we're detectives and your past has all the clues we'll need to figure out what's going on. This may take more than one session depending on how extensive your history is. I will guide you with strategic questions along the way and you don't ever have to tell me anything you're not comfortable disclosing. Session #3: Creating a treatment plan: I will help you set up measurable, achievable goals so you can be certain you are making progress and you'll know when it is time to terminate therapy. Think of me as a therapist genie! Instead of setting myself free I work on setting you free by helping you become your own therapist. Semi structure of my sessions in general: 1) I start off on a positive note 2) we identify at least 1 issue 3) reflection towards the end 4) what you can do during the week.

I started seeing Elizabeth a little over a year ago, and I'm so thankful I did. I barely recognize the person I was a year ago. I never thought it would be possible to manage my OCD, but through Elizabeth's guidance, compassion, and practical tools my quality of life has drastically improved. I'm able to live with so much more ease Elizabeth constantly goes the extra mile- if there's a book, podcast, or even an instagram quote she thinks could be helpful to your healing she'll send it your way. She's the first doctor I've ever felt was actually listening with care. Anyone would be lucky to have her as a therapist!
Elizabeth is a complete and total game changer of a therapist. She leads with patience and understanding, but doesn't shy away from being a tough love cheerleader when you need one. She is full of wisdom and anecdotes to help you understand concepts and see things in a new light. We often joke that she is a "mindset ninja" because she has helped me change the way I process life and tackle challenges without me realizing all the seeds she was planting for me. I've been seeing her for a year and a half and I cannot believe how much lighter and happier I feel, using her tools. You can tell she really loves what she does and it comes through in her work - she is always learning and reading and focusing on finding new ways to help people. Elizabeth is one of the most thoughtful and passionate people I've ever met and you are very lucky if she's your therapist!
I’ve been in therapy for over 20 years now but it wasn’t until working with Elizabeth that I actually changed and felt my mood improve significantly. Elizabeth is thoughtful, professional, kind, and has a very calming presence. She has helped me to make necessary life shifts without making me feel judged. I owe a lot of my growth and self discovery to Elizabeth. She’s a top tier therapist.
Elizabeth is a truly fantastic therapist. We have been working together for over a year now and she constantly amazes me in her abilities to listen, provide super helpful on-point advice, and both support and challenge, all with compassion and a sense of humor. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our sessions and is so thoughtful about how she presents it all. Elizabeth has helped me tremendously in managing anxiety, navigating a family crisis and burnout, and just generally grow in relationships. I feel so lucky to have met her!
The first time I talked with Elizabeth, I felt this great sense of ease and trust, which helped me to open up and honestly answer her questions and talk about my past and experiences, which were the reasons why I had sought after a therapist, in the first place. She gave tactical advice and steps to help me with my OCD and perfectionist tendencies. If there is a book, podcast, app, etc. that she thought would help me, she would send it, and that level of accountability and thoughtfulness made me appreciate her even more.
What I love about Elizabeth is that she's a positive, encouraging and friendly presence. She offers tangible steps on how to improve your life while addressing the underlying issue you may have, which in my case is OCD. She listens and is able to switch gears on a dime and talk about anything you want that may be bothering you. Most of all, she's compassionate and will work with you incredibly hard to help address your needs. Even after only a few months, I (along with my partner) have already noticed and felt an appreciable difference from before. I'm happier, less anxious and have a lot more tools on how to combat OCD. I highly recommend Elizabeth -- anyone would be lucky to work with her!
Elizabeth is the best! My daughter has been seeing her for almost 2 years after experiencing some trauma and the pandemic. The progress she's made in this time has been incredible. For a long time, I feared that my daughter would never be her old self again, but with Elizabeth's help, she's found herself again. She's been able to implement the techniques learned from Elizabeth and genuinely feels like she's in a better place than she's been in a long time. Elizabeth's compassion and ability to connect with her patients made therapy an easy thing for my teen. She looks forward to her sessions and feels like she's meeting with an old friend, not a medical provider, which makes all the difference world. Elizabeth has made a huge impact in our lives, and not just with my daughter. She's given us our relationship back as well, taught us to communicate with each other better. I am so grateful for the place my daughter and I are in now and I truly believe that Elizabeth is a big part of that.
I started seeing Elizabeth for over a year now, and she has been extraordinary in helping me work through my anxiety and depression. Admittedly I first approached therapy with a cynical attitude, as I figured what insights could a therapist offer that I haven't already psychoanalyzed myself? I decided to finally make the leap to try therapy when I realized I was stuck in the same place in life, and found myself incredibly fortunate to come across Elizabeth as my first therapist. Throughout our sessions, Elizabeth has not only helped reshape my idea of therapy but also how I understand and perceive myself. Just by reflecting on the person I was prior to our sessions versus the person I am now makes me incredibly grateful for taking the leap, and I'll continue to look forward to our future sessions together.
Elizabeth has been working with me for more over a year now and she has been very professional through my entire experience. I have been always very comfortable during our sessions and she has always accommodated and has been very flexible with my schedule!
Elizabeth is the best therapist and I’m lucky to be her patient. She has the personality and the knowledge to help anyone. I appreciate her patience and understanding, something even other therapists lack.
I appreciate Elizabeth's assistance and advice in every way. She always acts professionally and is willing to assist. She has outstanding knowledge in her field, which is helping my recovery. I would and will pass along her name to any friends, relatives, and colleagues who could use her services. she really helped me when I was at my lowest. Now I feel very healthy mentally and could not have been more thankful for Elizabeth.
Elizabeth practically rescued me when I was at one of the lowest points of my life. I have anxiety and depression and I don’t know where I would be today if it wasn’t for her. She is kind, personable, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. I always looked forward to therapy with her (had to discontinue lately due to scheduling conflicts but I’m looking to return at some point). I would highly recommend her for any of your mental health needs!
Amazing! Elizabeth is Very sweet she made me and my daughter feel super comfortable with every single session I highly recommend her!
I always felt more open minded about myself after my visit. Elizabeth helps you understand a lot of things about yourself even the ones you don’t want to accept. Would recommend!
Elizabeth is very knowledgeable and her background proves. I opened up about situations in my life I would never speak about. She also gave me good ideas for relapse prevention and other coping skills to lift my attitude and have more positive outlooks on life. Always followed up to make sure i was doing good. She is a big part in a my life. Thank you very much
Elizabeth was a great therapist! Her intent was always to provide honest, clear and sound advice when dealing with difficult situations. I would highly recommend her for many clients!
Elizabeth was my son’s therapist for about a year and helped us through a very difficult time. During the pandemic, my son developed some new and worrisome fears that Elizabeth was able to help him process and overcome. She was always patient, kind and supportive and made time for a parent check in with myself or my husband at the end of each session. We feel so incredibly grateful that we found her!
Having Elizabeth as my therapist was one of the best things to ever happen to me! She has aided me in healing from some of the most challenging and lowest points of my life. She was nothing but honest, understanding, resilient, and supporting during each and every session. She was never judgmental and was always easy to talk to. Elizabeth has taught me so many positive and impactful coping mechanisms that I continue to use in my everyday life. She has helped me to achieve all my goals that her and I set when we first started our sessions. It is because of her that I now walk steadily along this road of life rather then tripping over every bump like I used to. I was very lucky to have her as my therapist and anyone else would be too!
Our son has been seeing Elizabeth for more than 1 year. Although initially he was resistant to therapy her approach made him feel at ease and very quickly won him over. Even when discussing tough subjects she has an amazing way of making a person feel supported and understood. With Elizabeth’s help we have seen great improvement in our son’s behavior and mental state as well as gained valuable tools in managing behavioral issues with our other kids. We absolutely love her!
Elizabeth is the best! I have been working with her for almost a year and she has always listened to me and validated how I felt. She has been someone that I have felt so comfortable opening up to and always have left feeling more optimistic after the visit.
I have never been open to the idea of therapy but coming to Elizabeth has definitely changed my mind. I have been seeing her for almost a year and love my experience thus far. If you’re thinking whether she’s the one for you; please look no further. Elizabeth is very empathetic, thoughtful, calm and trustworthy.
This was my very first time doing therapy and Elizabeth made me feel like I can share anything with her. She constantly goes out of her way to make sure that I would always have the resources I need to succeed in conquering whatever it is that I would share with her and she has made doing therapy sessions for me something I look forward to each and every week. If you ever get a chance to book Elizabeth don’t let it slip because she is someone that truly cares about what she does for a living and it certainly shows each and every session.
Cannot express how much I appreciate all of Elizabeth's knowledge and guidance. Speaking to her truly improved my quality of life, understanding of self and helps keep my pursuit of personal goals on track.
Ms Elizabeth is a dream. She has been my sons therapist for almost 2 years. She is so patient and her advice has helped not only My son and myself but how I deal with My son and better understand him. I am so thankful to find her.
