Getting to know Elizabeth Fumia

As a licensed mental health therapist with a Master’s in Social Work from the University at Buffalo (North Campus), my mission is to provide a safe, compassionate, and empowering space where clients can explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences without judgment. I believe in a collaborative approach to mental health that respects each individual’s unique journey. With over 12 years of experience working with diverse populations, my goal is to support clients in developing effective coping strategies, building resilience, and achieving meaningful personal growth. I am deeply committed to cultural humility, inclusivity, and ethical practice, and I continuously seek professional development to remain informed of the latest research and therapeutic techniques. Whether you are seeking support through a challenging time or striving for deeper self-understanding, I am here to walk with you on your path toward healing and well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

After graduating from UB School for Social Work, I accrued 12 years of experience providing individual therapy. I specialize in working with individuals facing challenges related to anxiety, depression, interpersonal relationships, life transitions (moving, career changes), and personal growth. I approach each session with individuality, aiming to provide patients with the encouragement they need to overcome life’s challenges. To do this, I combine multiple types of therapy to meet each patient’s individual needs with open and accepting conversations free from judgment and criticism. I believe in focusing on believes in focusing on your intrinsic strengths to help you develop and utilize coping skills that resonate with you personally.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I'll contact you for an initial consultation by phone to determine our working compatibility, which is an important part of the therapy process. I think that being genuine and authentic are the two most important characteristics of a therapist; I show my authentic self and create a comfortable space where I invite my clients to do the same. I hope to work with motivated clients who are willing to make changes, do the work, and not simply look for the "quick fix." I try my best to make sure that the way that I do therapy is easy and approachable. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting the outcome to be different. So, let's do something different!

Elizabeth is great. She’s funny and understanding.
As a first-time therapy goer, Liz has been excellent. She adapts to what you want to work on and creates a safe space for open conversation.
Elizabeth is a practiced and trusted therapist. After our sessions, I feel heard and supported, and I walk way with new tools to try for better mental and emotional health.
Elizabeth has been a helpful part of my growth and healing since I started working with her. I’ve been seeing Elizabeth for over 6 months now, as I processed a difficult transition in my life and into new goals and ambitions. I’ve really found my stride in therapy, working with Elizabeth. I am always given space to share anything on my mind and am always met with grace, non-judgmental feedback, and questions to consider and process on my own. I feel like our work is consistent and thorough and deeply involved by both parties and I feel lucky to have found such a match!
I’ve had enough experiences to identify an anomaly gem… her authenticity, confidence, and gentle demeanor are literally the perfect combination when you’re looking for someone to hear you without judgement. Believe me when I say look no further and stop scrolling reviews ?? I firmly believe she saved my life - her confidence and gentle demeanor are the perfect combination if you’re looking for someone to hear you without judgment and strike that rare balance of sympathizing and imparting wisdom and advice that’s life changing.,
I love Liz! I have been seeing her for a little over a year and she approaches every session with empathy. She has helped me a lot with general anxiety, health anxiety, and change. She helps me reflect and gives me tools to keep in my pocket for when I need them.
I worked with Elizabeth for several months during a time of major life transitions, and she was incredibly supportive throughout the process. She’s a compassionate, patient, and non-judgmental listener who helped guide me toward making healthier decisions for myself. Elizabeth also provided practical tools to manage my anxiety, and I always appreciated how responsive and available she was when I needed support. I highly recommend her as a therapist and have continued to return to her as needed.
My first session was great! Elizabeth was extremely thorough, read the forms I completed beforehand, was respectful if there was anything I didn’t want to share, and struck a great balance between professional and relatable. By the end, she shared her observations and they were spot on and accurate based on only one intake meeting. I’m looking forward to my next session!

She’s helped me work through a tough period in my life through relatable and actionable feedback. Very organized punctual and a great listener. Highly recommend!
Liz has always been responsive, receptive, and supportive during our sessions. Her approach is sympathetic and sincere, but she always strives to be straightforward in her feedback. For especially sensitive topics, she has a gentle and nonjudgmental manner. She is also invested in her patient's progress and offers concrete suggestions & prompts. This has helped me achieve more confidence and growth in the life areas that we discuss.
Elizabeth is great and very thoughtful. Allows me to work out the things I need to work so I can stick to them and they give suggestions without pushing them on to me. It is very comfortable to talk about the issues that I have.
Elizabeth has been extremely supportive in our sessions and is super empathetic. I feel like she’s been really helpful in challenging me in a way to guide me in shifting negative thought patterns, something I’ve struggled with way more than I’ve realized. A lot of the work done in sessions has stuck and she’s helped me learn how to navigate dealing with ADHD in a proactive way
I have been seeing Elizabeth for over 2 years and cannot recommend her enough to others seeking help. I have tried therapy at multiple times throughout my life, but have never felt a real connection or progress through therapy until i started seeing Elizabeth. Not only has Elizabeth been helping me through a tough part of my life; but has better than anyone help me realize that i need to care for myself and thats alright. I would suggest anyone that is struggling to speak with Elizabeth.
I love Liz!! She is extremely empathetic while also giving me realistic tough love that I sometimes need to hear. She remembers details, helps me put bigger pictures together, and is very patient and understanding. I look forward to seeing her every week!
I love Liz! She is extremely empathetic and understanding while also giving me some tough love that I need to hear sometimes. She remembers details and helps me put together puzzle pieces in my life. I look forward to seeing her every week!!
I've had a positive experience working with Liz. She's incredibly easy to talk to, always attentive, and brings a clear, goal-oriented approach to our sessions. Her knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been incredibly helpful with managing anxiety and depression. I've felt genuinely supported throughout our time together and would highly recommend Liz to anyone looking for a compassionate and effective therapist.
Elizabeth is an empathetic and caring therapist who genuinely wants to see me grow and develop. She is supportive and encouraging, but also curious. She often references things I've shared in previous sessions and threads through my different experiences, which is super helpful to see how my experiences relate or intersect. It's been great working with Elizabeth, I definitely recommend!
So thankful to be working with Elizabeth! She is a great objective listener and has given me some great advice and tools to help me in my day to day. She is honest and always makes me feel validated and comfortable.
I found my therapist after being referred to a pactitioner who was ultimately not taking new patients. I couldn’t be more glad I did, because Liz and I are going on one year together! As a provider, Liz takes a holistic approach to care. There is no application of care that applies to everyone and Liz intrinsically understands this, which I appreciate as her patient. Your care will be tailored to fit your needs, and there is as much flexibility in scheduling as you may need. As a therapist, Liz is an amazing partner and her guidance and support have been invaluable in helping me get to where I want to be with my care. Despite the fact that I see Liz virtually, she is present, engaged and invested and I never feel the “loss” of not being able to meet in person. I couldn't recommend Liz more highly!
Liz takes a holistic approach to care, which means that your needs will always be centered and addressed. Friendly, empathetic, and extremely knowledgeable, I have had almost a year with Liz and I am so grateful for the partnership and guidance she has exercised throughout. The factors that brought me to therapy are still factors, but my toolkit has grown by leaps and bounds and I feel better equipped to understand and work on myself with Liz’s guidance. Doing virtual sessions has also been very helpful, as it allows me the flexibility to set the pace and tone of our visits without ever feeling like we are in separate places. I couldn’t recommend Liz enough, and am so grateful for her care.
I’ve been seeing Liz for a few months now and have had a such a great experience with her. She very easy to talk and open up to, and I’ve found such great results with her straightforward guidance and kind validation. She has encouraged and motivated me to change the way I think about the things that affect me in a much more productive and non-self deprecating way, which at one point thought was impossible. I find her character to be very inspiring and would like to some day be as strong and supportive as her. I have been dealing my issues for as long as I can remember, and when I came to her I wasn’t sure I could change….but working with her has made me feel like I am becoming a better person who can overcome the obstacles that bring me anxiety for the first time in my life. I still have much to work on but Liz has greatly impacted my well being in such a positive way that I could not recommend her enough.
I’ve had many therapists over the past 10 years and Liz is by far the best therapist I’ve ever had! So awesome and really helpful. Highly recommended.
Working with Liz has been an incredibly transformative experience. She is highly attuned to my needs, consistently respectful of my time, and brings a warm, thoughtful presence to each session. Her guidance has played a significant role in my personal growth, and I’ve noticed meaningful progress in both my mindset and emotional well-being. It’s truly been a pleasure to work with her, and I’m grateful for the support and insight she continues to provide.
Liz is a person I can singlehandedly credit with saving and changing my life forever. She is a very patient therapist, with a lot of empathy/ sympathy for others, and above all is very open minded and makes me feel comfortable sharing everything going on that is troubling me. She gives practical solutions, suggests profound and well-researched passages/books/ articles to better explore issues + coping mechanisms, and overall is a realistic and very helpful therapist. She has helped me through some of the most traumatic times in my life and helped me get over lifelong struggles, and I can confidently say she is the best therapist a person could ask for! She is also very culturally sensitive, understands ethnic family dynamics, and more, which was a big help for me! 100% would recommend to all!
Liz has all the characteristics I was looking for in a mental health professional. She’s understanding, kind and most importantly provides a safe space to allow me to feel comfortable in expressing my feelings. She has helped me tremendously in navigating grief, depression, and anxiety.
Elizabeth was very helpful!

Elizabeth on our first session was a great listener and gave thoughtful insight to my current situation. While this being my first session of therapy I'm glad we were able to pinpoint the core of the rest of the sessions. I'm hopeful for the help Elizabeth will provide in the future!
