Getting to know Ellen Case

Have you been bearing life's changes and hardships, persevering, but not feeling that your life, job, or relationships are as meaningful as they could be? Perhaps you've felt disconnected from family or friends, missing a kind of genuine closeness that could be nourishing. Or maybe a loss, break-up, move, or other sudden change or trauma has thrown your life off track, making you question what's most important. Embedded within every crisis, heartbreak-every moment of despair or terror-are seeds of possibility. In the work I do, we use these pivotal moments as opportunities to change the course of your life. Old beliefs and patterns of thinking and assuming can hold you back at a subconscious level. Together, we work to bring these old patterns to awareness so you can choose to live your life with greater self-awareness, authenticity, agency, and richer relationships-and to be more engaged with living. I work with clients to get to the root of core issues and to find and nourish the seeds of potential within. Our work can help you change negative or addictive thinking patterns, transform your sense of self, relationships, work life, and creativity, while building hope and self-confidence. My style is interactive, down-to-earth, collaborative, and respectful. I ask meaningful questions, listen closely, link important issues, and offer new perspectives. I balance support with challenge, acceptance with encouragement, and compassion with belief in your ability to change and grow. In therapy, one size-or approach-does not fit all, so I work to tailor a therapy plan that suits your unique core issues and goals. My specializations include relationship issues, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, loss and grief, substance use, and trauma. I hold a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from John F. Kennedy University, which informs my thoughtful and evidence-based approach to therapy.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Hello, my name is Ellen Case MFT and I am an experienced, effective psychotherapist. What sets me apart is the breadth and depth of my professional and personal experience. I have taught interns in corporate and academic settings, I also wrote and edited publications for Chevron and Mills College--their press releases, marketing magazines, brochures, and executive speeches. I've also worked in health care clinics especially at Planned Parenthood where i counseled women and men on STDs, birth control, abortion, family planning, and was manager of the Vasectomy and HIV clinics. I've spent the last 25 years in private practice and supervising interns. I'm focused on CBT, DBT, HRT, solution-focused, strengths-based and relational psychodynamic theories. I'm a person of depth, especially because of my own personal therapy and my writing. I adapt my treatment modalities based on client issues and responses. My treatment style is a balance of building trust through empathy, intentional questioning to get to the heart of the client's issues. I bring caring, compassion and collaboration to my work.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process when working with clients is to provide a n atmosphere of safety and trust, to express my curiosity and caring, I try to express my understanding of what the client is telling me, and offer an empathic response as well as suggestions, questions and concern. My work rests on the foundation of an honest, caring, non-judgmental therapeutic relationship.
