Psychotherapist
CA
Hey, I'm Elyce, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Southern California and the founder of The Therapy Co. I earned my master's degree in Social Work from San Diego State University in San Diego. For over a decade, I've been professionally working as a social worker, but to be honest, my unofficial “therapizing career” began way before that with my Barbies, friends, and family. In many ways, as cliché as it sounds, the mental health field found me, and I am so glad that it did because now I get to help women like you create a life you feel empowered to live. I won't sugarcoat it; healing takes some hard work, but I'm here to remind you that it's worth it and you don't have to do it alone. For me, it's personal. My mama and the experience of losing her is what keeps me connected to why I became a therapist. When I was 10, my mom died by suicide. She was an amazing person in so many ways and the absolute best mama. Losing her to suicide drives me to really push the power of empathy, human connection, and belonging. I might not have walked your exact path, but I can totally empathize with it. Big shoutout to my own trauma, shaping who I am today. I don't always subscribe to sayings like, “everything happens for a reason,” but I do believe in finding meaning in our experiences and radically accepting them for what they are. And while we aren't often responsible for the hard things we go through, we do have a responsibility in our own healing journey. While this approach can be really difficult to navigate, I'm here to tell you that it can also be so rewarding and lead to so much personal growth. I want that for you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In our sessions, it’s all about your story, your journey, and your process. Life throws all kinds of experiences our way - some amazing, some awful, and plenty in-between. I'm all about empowering you to not only acknowledge but also embrace your unique story and experiences. That doesn't mean loving every part of it, but rather finding acceptance and moving forward by moving through it. You can expect that chatting with me will feel casual and relatable, while still remaining professional. Subjectively speaking, I might even be considered funny sometimes. Ultimately, I am here to help empower you, cheer you on, and support you along the way. Think of therapy with me like creating a customized playlist. I blend together different approaches, modalities, and interventions with an understanding that the therapy process should be tailored to you, your needs, and your life. There's no "quick fix" or "one-size-fits-all" approach, so we'll work together to see what works best for you and your needs. I also offer brainspotting because everything is connected. Brainspotting is a brain-based therapy that works by using both the brain and the body. During brainspotting, we are able to access an area of the brain that we cannot access during traditional talk-therapy. Essentially what that means is, we cannot talk our way out of what we need to release through the body. Our brains are super amazing but when we experience something traumatic, it can overwhelm our brain’s ability to cope and process, resulting in pieces of the unprocessed experiences frozen in time and space. Just as amazing though, your brain can also heal. By keeping your gaze on a specific external eye position, you can maintain focus on a specific internal spot where trauma has been stored, and from there, deeply and mindfully process to release what the brain and body have been holding onto. And even better - YES, brainspotting is offered virtually.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

First we'll jump onto a consultation call to answer any questions you have, get to know each other a little bit, and make sure we are a "good fit." If we are both like, YES, let's do this, then I'll ask you to complete some paperwork that will help me get to know more about you. Next, during our first session, also known as an "intake session", we will do a dive into things like: what brought you to therapy, goals, and what you would like to get out of the process. After the initial session, each session is 50-minutes. From there we'll work together to determine how often we'll meet. As a modern, millennial therapist, I bring my authentic and professional self into the session with you. I believe in creating a safe, welcoming environment where you feel comfy being your genuine self.
