Getting to know Em Shea
I believe therapy is a collaborative relationship built on connection, empathy, and authenticity. In session, I welcome clients to guide our pacing as trust and comfort is built, as part of creating a trauma-informed space. I utilize a strengths-based, relational approach to support clients as they navigate questions related to gender, sexuality, parenthood, trauma/PTSD, depression, and anxiety. A central part of my work is attending to privilege in our shared space.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I identify as queer and non-binary, which directly informs my non-judgemental, feminist, and anti-oppressive practice. As a white person, I have a position of privilege in all spaces, but seek to attend to that privilege by actively practicing anti-racism and cultural awareness and humility.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
After receiving your insurance cards, our billing team needs 2–3 business days to verify coverage. You’ll get an email from me with a link to the TheraNest client portal and steps to set up your account and complete intake and consent forms. Then, you will receive a confirmation email with meeting place information.
Please do your best to be on time, but I understand things can happen! I will wait and try to reach you by phone and email during the first 15 minutes.
Our first session together will focus on getting a better understanding of what brings you to therapy, personal and family history, as well as time for you to ask any questions you may have of me.
